But I really think coaches are taking less stands on that front nowadays. You can’t really expect kids to sit for 4 years to MAYBE get a chance senior year to start. Even if we look through our eyes at it…Some kids still want to get on the field and knock someone’s head off, and Balom is behind two players that likely aren’t losing their jobs.
But overall, it would be a clear double standard for coaches to go to the portal to recruit over you, while you are supposed to sit there and not explore YOUR options.
I can understand the playing time angle, but if you’ve already made the move to leave (just to come back) then it’s clear there isn’t much holding you back from dipping when just a little adversity pops up again.
Hopefully, Balom realized that no one wanted him and his two options are stay at Miami and continue to compete (you never know what happens with injuries and the like) or run off to some middle of nowhere FCS school. If he came to this conclusion, then hopefully he can find himself in a position similar to James Lewis all those years ago.
What I’m saying is…The coaches may have encouraged him to look! They don’t see it as quitting on anyone.
I think there is a definite scenario where…They for instance like him more than Keyshawn Washington or Jalen Harrell, but told him, without injury you aren’t starting next year, but you are in the top 4, weigh your options, but you are welcome back…Whereas they may have just told a Washington/Harrell…Best wishes, we don’t see a place for you on this roster.
As of right now my meaningless, remaining portal scenario looks like this. Not counting QB (Matocha is supposedly gone) If Garcia leaves, I really think we replace that schools spot with the best walk on we have.
Definitely further portal departures:
OL
OL
DE Davis/Williams/Ishmael
2-5 more of
QB Garcia (Imo schools would be replaced by best walk-on)
S Balom after spring
LB Smith or Smith
OL 3rd additional
OL 4th additional
WR (Likely Redding but who knows)
WR 2nd additional
TE
Again, I have no info…Just saying I think these are all realistic possibilities and 3 is the minimum of further portal from now thru early summer, I would bet on more. Let’s hope there are no more portal surprises from good players.
Then I think our definite additions looks like this:
OL Cohen
LB Mauigao
WR
DT
DT/DL
S/DB
CB
And maybes (another 0-3)
OL #2 additional
WR #2 additional
LB #2 only if one more leaves, and even then it’s a maybe
DE Only if really a contributor as we have young studs.
RB (only if no Fletche, so its basically a substitution)
Very true. Portal and NIL have made roster management a completely different beast. Can’t look at things through the same lens as 5 years ago.
And it cuts both ways – kids can look for better immediate opportunities instead of waiting 3 years, kids can look to maximize NIL. Likewise, coaches can look for immediate opportunities to improve their roster instead of recruiting over several years.
How long do you think it will be before the NCAA decides this “instant transfer” thing is a mistake and nixes it? I can’t believe too many schools are pleased with being faced with the prospect of sheer anarchy every year when it comes to their rosters.
It’s the equivalent of the NFL having every player be a free agent every season.
It will improve a ton as the Covid kids stop playing. I mean…we have kids playing 7 years! When we get back to 4-5 years, portal kids will find homes at a percentage closer to 60%.
THAT MEANS THE TOP GUARD IN THE NFL DRAFT THIS YEAR TRANSFERRED TO UF FROM A SMALL SCHOOL PROVED HE COULD PLAY AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL (THE SEC) AND IN DOING SO IMPROVED HIS DRAFT STOCK AND GOT PAID TO DO IT….
So 90 STUGOTZS SAYING THIS WILL STOP IS PURE NONSENSE….
THE PLAYERS RULING ON USC, PAC 12 ETC IS GOING TO OFFICIALLY CHANGE THE GAME….
ALL THE MONEY THEY HAVE BEEN STEALING WILL MAKE ITS WAY TO THE PLAYERS AS THEY WILL NOW BE EMPLOYEES…
Nothing you are saying contradicted what he is saying…Jesus Christ. And yes kids will be in school less which will mean less 6-7 year kids…Al Blades types, etc…
IT IS NOT “GOING TO IMPROVE” IT IS ONLY GOING TO GET WORSE BECAUSE WHEN A PLAYER BALLS THAT WAS NOT HIGHLY RATED OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL (BECAUSE THE RANDOM COACH “DEVELOPED HIM”) HE WILL GET BETTER OFFERS AND MOVE….
IT IS NOT GOING TO BE LESS “6 AND 7 YEAR COVID PLAYERS” ARE STAYING BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT VERY GOOD….
THOSE GUYS ARE NOT MOVING UP THEY ARE MOVING DOWN LIKE THEY ALWAYS HAVE……
IT IS THE GUYS MOVING UP THAT RARELY HAPPENED BECAUSE OF THE TRANSFER RULES…
SOMETHING TO KEEP IN MIND….
THE 3 YEARS OUT OF HIGH SCHOOL RULE WILL BE ELIMINATED BECAUSE IT IS UNCONSTITUTIONAL….
CFB COULD TAKE ANOTHER TURN SOON…
DIAPER FACE CATFISHY MIGHT HAVE TO START SELLING HIS SERVICES TO PRO TEAMS….
I’d leave the portal as is. There are some restrictions though. For instance, you get 1 get out of jail free card where you don’t have to sit out a year for transferring. If you transfer a 2nd time, then you have to sit (unless a waiver takes place like Darrel Jackson).
Leave the portal and the transfer get out of jail free card as it is, but remove the waiver system.
Let the kids transfer all they want, but they will be eating up their eligibility after that 1st transfer.
