And any individual country can intervene if they so choose. The USA, for instance, could send troops in to assist Ukraine. This wouldn’t even be a threat to NATO. The rest of the NATO countries wouldn’t be obligated to help because this isn’t a defensive action.

WAR UPDATE
As predicted, Ukraine’s artillery and defenses were hit hard and mostly neutralized in the initial hours of the invasion.
Russia then went on a multi-front blitz, attacking fast.
Troops from fronts in Belarus came south and secured Chernobyl. Not only is this a highway to Kyiv, but they probably want to secure the old nuclear materials from possible use.
Naval commandos came out of the water in Odessa to secure the southwest.
Armor stationed in Crimea pushed up to the Dnieper river before meeting resistance.
Donetsk and Luhansk have been shelled as forces move past.
Karkiv is an ideal entry point from Russia->Ukraine but that city has been putting up a bold fight. Ukraine just blew a bridge there to obstruct enemy incursions.
A unit of paratroopers landed in the airport outside of Kyiv. Their mission was to secure and wait for reinforcements. As this is vital ground to protecting the capital, Ukraine’s forces dealt a blow. Early reports were that they took back the airfield, but later reports suggest fighting is ongoing. It sounds like the elite paratroopers were killed or captured, and a support aircraft had to turn back to Russia as they were unable to land. This territory will be key in capturing Kyiv.
So Russia has probably taken more losses than they would have liked, and they have been slowed down, but I’m not sure that’s enough. Word is a bunch of armor is rolling toward Kyiv with the intention of surrounding it.
Latest news is Russian “saboteurs” have infiltrated Kyiv. they are assassins and their target is Zelensky and his family. Dude might not be alive in 24 hours.
It only ends bad for him if the western coalition responds appropriately.
I think Putin is largely banking on that we’ll do mostly nothing, other than sanctions.

I thought he was more savvy than this too. but at 69, and dealing with problems on the home front, there’s a thought that he’s backed into a corner. He needs to make moves to stay in power and for his legacy.
