Safe to say the current situation is merely a continuation of the 2014 situation (just as a refresher the democratically elected president was run out of the country by a highly organized and well-coordinated faction).

Yes- Russia has a military presence in the region (they are neighbors).
And yes- there was previous active military engagement under Obama’s watch (Crimea).
And yes- Russia could have moved in at any time…. BUT THEY DIDNT. Until now.

Because there was this gorilla in the room named Trump would have immediately cut off the Oligarchs money and assets in American banks. He also would have made it clear that there would be a response.

Ukraine is just another example of Biden failure. Biden’s war on domestic energy production has empowered Russia’s oil economy. Neither the U.S. nor EU will consent to fight in Ukraine. Sanctions will last until winter in Europe rolls around again. As they always do, the EU will lift sanctions rather than shiver in their homes in winter. IMO, the invasion would not have happened under Trump who was extremely successful with respect to foreign policy.
If you think Ukraine is an outrage, it would not be surprising to see China move more aggressively against Taiwan, for China realizes that America has a pitiful fool in the White House. Former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates asserted in 2014 that Biden “has been wrong on nearly every major foreign policy and national security issue over the past four decades.”
This is purely an assumption and you have no way of knowing that. And there plenty of evidence to suggest that Trump would have stayed silent, if not endorse, Putin.
You would think that there’d be news on this - like with Russia - that China was getting into position to attack.
But I have this thought in the back of my head that if China were ready, now would be perfect.
That would be absolutely bananas.

This is a long game. Russia was supporting the separatists and had to help that settle so they could declare independent states. Russia had to wait out covid which, laugh if you want, armies take very seriously. Russia had to enact a longterm siege of Kyiv. Remember that the military option is probably their final option (right before nuclear anyway). Moscow was trying to win Kyiv back politically and economically first. many of Russia’s plans failed and this is what they’re left with.
