Will Cristobal be a candidate for UM?

I am assuming Diaz is probably gone with a new AD. Does Mario Cristobal become the number one candidate?

The word is…At least in internet land…That he is the #1 candidate.

He’s not my #1 pick (he’s not much for innovation, and is pretty average on game day often letting teams hang around, he has DEFINITELY improved though) …But he clearly is better than Manny Diaz

Would he cost a lot yet…But rumors seem to be flying that he would take the same ballpark/be reasonable for a chance to come home.

IDEAL SCENARIO FOR UM IF IT IS CRISTOBAL! Oregon needs to lose another game…Any of the 3 (assuming they make pac 12 ship) so that he can hit the ground running. Because if they stay with only 1 loss he’s headed to the final 4 and wouldn’t get started at UM til January.

Why pay a mint for Cristobal ?! Ye Gods ! There are hungry young coaching candidates out there willing to work for less than half of what Cristobal will cost and can produce similar or better results.

Bring a hungry guy and have escalator clauses in his contract. We keep shooting ourselves in the foot .

Doubtful. He would cost too much. His buyout would probably be astronomical.

Makes more sense for him to stay in Oregon, buy his wife a house in Miami and charter her back and forth as needed. I doubt she sees much of him during the season anyway.

If Manny wins the last two games and finishes 7-5, the new AD may opt to keep him for a year.
Unlikely but possible.

Really depends on the new AD who I presume won’t start until late December or January.

Hungry young guys?

The problem with hungry young guys is that they are looking for stepping stones so they never stick around, or they are not ready for the limelight. Al Golden was 42 years old when he was named HBC at Miami. For that matter, technically Manny was a “hungry young guy” when he was hired (44 years old) and we all see how that is working out.

While Larry Coker and Randy Shannon were not a “young guys”, neither had any real experience with a major program.

Miami should stop these experimental hires. Miami does not need another “project” HBC hire. What Miami needs is someone with some HBC experience, preferably somewhere with some success at a Power 5 program.

Let me be clear: I am not suggesting we go for Cristobal, but at least Cristobal checks some of the boxes.

I agree, no more experimental head coaches. I doubt any well established coach will take the job, not enough money and Miami has become a place where careers go to die.

Some 40-ish guy who has been a HC with some success at a smaller venue or in a lesser conference. Maybe make an exception for a younger assistant who had tremendous success elsewhere like a Kirby Smart type.

Maybe Lane? Buyout too much?

I have a feeling they will hire a younger coach that none of us expected.

Thanks to FSU for getting rid of Blake. At least there is some hope now.

You just never know with coaches. I hope Miami gets lucky for a change.

Lane Kiffin suffers from Foot-IN-Mouth disease…and we’d be counting the minutes until he bolts for elsewhere.

Look we can/should scour the the land of non-P5 programs . Last thing we need is a recycled candidate with a bloated ego looking to pad his nest.

+1.

NEEEED HC Experience

Strongly prefer power 5 experience.

Like the Fresno St. HC as the best of “gambles”

I think they are going to make a big play for Cristobal.

Isn’t his buyout huge?

Miami is going to outbid Phil Knight?

I’m thinking no.

I’m not saying I want Cristobol…

But why the F would he want to come here? I know he’s alumni but this place isTHE CAREER KILLER in college football.

Every coach who has come here in the past 20 years is either back to being an assistant or gone lol.

If I’m Cristobol or anyone with a fucking pulse I hard pass Miami.

Luke Fickell

Miami has hired exactly one (1) young HC with experience in the last 2 decades. Al Golden.

Coker - no HC experience
Shannon - same
Golden - 2 winning seasons. No bowl wins
Mark Richt - fired. game had passed him
Manny Diaz - no HC experience

We’ve frankly done an abysmal job. 4 “family hires”. Al Golden and similar hires work out sometimes and other times they don’t. It’s the best of the 5 hires post 2000.

Be patient. See what happens the next few weeks. Where does SC go (Aranda?). LSU and UF (presumably) not someone we would hire but could have a domino effect if they hire Kiffen/Franklin…then Ole Miss/Penn State/SC/Miami seems like pretty even as far as desirability.

Fickell would be a good hire, but that’s the problem. There are a LOT of vacancies opening up, and those teams have a LOT deeper pockets and upside than Miami does. Fickell is too desirable for Miami

Because it’s his home and in the past he has supposedly said he wants the job.

I think the coach will have ties to the AD somehow some way

They will have a past relationship at some point

Make the right AD hire and everything else will fall into place.

Pete Garcia, the AD from FIU where Mario coached is stepping down as FIU AD at the end of the year…

On Canesport, the Rivals site as well as their you tube channel, there’s a discussion with Furman and Shodell about the James firing. It’s about an hour and a half and has a lot of bickering too so skip that but at the crux of it all, Furman is pretty firm on the belief that this had been brewing for a month or more and didn’t just happen yesterday. He seems to think it’s Cristobal and this could get done in a couple weeks - meaning the new AD and coach and it’d be done by mid December to save the signing class or even add big time to it.

Now, Shodell was more in the camp that yeah, it COULD be Mario but prying him away will be difficult (and it will be). He also couldn’t state enough that this isn’t really about this signing class - it’s about GETTING THIS RIGHT FOR ONCE! Get the experienced AD who can do a proper search for a coach and find the coach who clicks with the new AD and is the right fit for UM. Experience is a must and he’ll have to recruit like mad and be able to click in the local high schools.

I’d have to say I’m more on Shodell’s side. I don’t like losing some of the big names down here this cycle but we’ve only got 8 on board right now and at least the portal is there to fill needs. If you get a coach who pops, getting players in here won’t be that difficult. We’ll also see the difference by about year two that it’s going in the right direction so I’m more about getting these hires right than I am saving a class in mid-December.

The AD and head coach…or the 2022 class?

I look at this list and I really wish Blake James took Al Golden aside in Year 2 or 3 and said, “Look, I believe in what you’re building, but D’No needs to go.”

I don’t know if this decision would have us in a different place right now or not, but it seems like we could’ve kept building something and made a more appealing situation for the next coach.
