No more important than 1st quarter…What’s your point? Why not find the coach that has them both ready out of the locker room and after the 1st quarter
WAIT ARE YOU SAYING ON THIS BOARD FOR A DECADE THE THEORY WASN’T GREAT COACHES MAKE HALFTIME ADJUSTMENTS?
THAT IS THE POINT…
WHY IS THAT SUDDENLY IGNORED?
I’m not ignoring it…At times (AT TIMES!) he has shown the ability to make some halftime adjustments
You are listing a positive…And beating it to death in your typical annoying fashion.
You could write a book with the current negatives though…Let’s list those
Seeing the name Dykes does make me think of his old man and his teams which would play Miami in the 80’s . It was always a highly entertaining game when the U faced the Red Raiders. With what he’s doing at SMU he’s certainly worth a roll of the dice.
Don’t think we’ll be able to get Stoops unless he is willing to take “Manny-money” but get the chance to go farther with access to the best recruits. He’s probably the best fit on the list.
Leave Schiano where he is ! Rutgers is where he needs to stay. He over-played his hand at Rutgers the first time around and made a jackass out of himself in Tampa Bay.
Let’s not forget how he bragged about turning down the “Miami job” all the while trying to claim credit for Miami’s defensive success under Butch.
Schiano has Rutgers greatly improved…He’s a midpack candidate for me. Not a must get by any means
I think Dykes is a sneaky good candidate too…And although his offenses wing it…They stay physical and run…I think he is offenses are slightly better than the Lashlee (was at SMU) offense even thought the final year Lashlee had slightly better personnel. I am pretty neutral on Lashlee…Glad we got SOME tempo going, and think he is better than a lot we’ve had, but I definitely think there are better out there. I don’t understand why no UM coach can effectively coach the execution of the WR screen for instance…It’s a staple in so many spreads and we cannot execute it. Mind boggling to me.
As for Stoops, I’d take him…BUT as I said…I can’t remember where I read, I think he’s a little sick of some of the Sofla kids he’s recruited recently lol…That doesn’t mean he can’t get over it obviously.
I really don’t care who we land if James is the AD and the BOT aren’t willing to open the pocketbook to bring in a full staff. Let’s not forget CMR was OC/HC. CMD is DC/HC. We have 3 “quality” admin staff vs Bama’s 30. Either up the payroll by $10m/yr or get creative with how you are going to win games and recruit.
I think we do have a decent staff for recruiting right now. And if we’d win a game occasionally overall talent would improve enough to be top 15-20 consistently. But some kids do care about wins and losses and for some reason Sofla kids will travel top play for 8 win teams but won’t stay home for it.
I had a close friend who played for Schiano at Rutgers. He hated him. They didn’t see eye to eye at all.
The feedback I got is that Schiano is a control freak and a micro manager. Not necessarily bad qualities but to be expected. My friend was also from the older regime so he probably got no points for that either.
Anyway- I like Schiano. I think he would actually be great for this program. We should have went after him a few years ago when it would have been easy to get him. Him being at Rutgers complicates the shit out of the issue.
Mel Tucker…Michst offering an absurd 95M over 10 years to keep LSU away. I thought it was mind numbingly stupid of their AD. That would make him 2nd highest paid coach, off 3/4 of a good season, at a school that would never win a championship. And that doesn’t even get into some of the red flags for fools gold.
Now down 42-0 before the half to *.
Why do AD’s even bother with multi-year deals? The only work one way, always to the coach’s benefit never to the school’s. . If a coach wants to leave for another job, they say screw the contract, I’m leaving. I would do one year deals, maybe two at most, with incentives and the understanding that if they team wins, the coach will be rewarded accordingly in his next one year contract.
Giving someone like Manny or Coach L long term, 4 and 5 years deals is both lazy and stupid. Like Coach L at age 87 is going to leave. Or, that any other school would hire Manny as a HC except maybe Temple and they wouldn’t hire him now. Blake is an idiot.
I can see if you are trying to lure a great coach who already has an multi-year deal elsewhere but aside from that, it makes no sense.
Also contracts without any performance standards are nuts. You shouldn’t pay someone $4M for winning five or six games or less. A monkey could do that . If should be $4M is you win 9 or more, 1M is you win 5 games or less.
All it’s doing at this point is inflating absurd salaries. Really? You thought it was a good idea to lock up a 2nd year coach for TEN YEARS???
I read somewhere there was 350M spent this year on paying out fired coaches. Ridiculous.
Pete Shinnick is a superior coach. He wins wherever he has coached. Winning is not accidental in his case because he has been a head coach in over 200 football games. Believe me, this guy is organized, a great recruiter as well as a teacher of the game. West Florida’s Athletic Department is a model of efficiency. Last year, West Florida won the Div 2 National Football Championship. The team has the best QB in the state in Austin Reed. This year, West Florida was the No. 1 ranked Div 2 team for the first 6 wks of the season. They still have a chance to repeat as national champions.
Hiring Shinnick would be a daring move by UM. The guy is easily up to the task, and he’d be an incredible bargain hire. Shinnick’s present salary at UWF is $141,000. UM would save millions hiring this guy, and they won’t do better than Pete. UM would have such a bundle of money leftover that it could offer great salaries to assistants. No other candidate but Shinnick will likely have a NC in his resume. Imagine this guy started the UWF program only four years ago from scratch, and he wins the NC four years later. That’s faster than any team in history
I realize UM would never hire Shinnick since UM has been very stupid over the years choosing football coaches. If they hired Pete Shinnick, he’d have us back in the top ten in two years. As for recruiting, Shinnick has eye for talent. UWF gets the leftovers not picked up by other higher division schools in Florida and the Southeast region. Shinnick turns the also rans into a national championship team. He’d be a great hire, certainly a very daring one, and why would he not win here when he has won everywhere else. I don’t look for UM to think outside the box, but here’s their opportunity to surprise everyone.
Elite80 interviewed Shinnick in one of his podcasts and is familiar with the athletic success of the West Florida Argos.
Because if you’re the only one doing 1 or 2 years then they devalue your contract because coaches will go for the longer term, safer position.
You’d also have to offer high premiums to offset this . And not with incentives, but with guarantees.
So unless the majority of the field goes this way- it would all balance out.
How many coaches signed to these multi-year million dollar contracts actually pan out?
Not very many … and yet.
Too many AD’s are concerned with appearances rather than results.
It is highly unlikely UM would consider Pete Shinnick who would be an excellent choice. Since the Shinnick scenario is not going to happen, my choices for the job would be l. Dave Aranda; 2. Lane Kiffin; Sonny Dykes, Chris Kelieman, Luke Fickel, Jamey Chadwell, Lance Leopold.
Aranda, kiffin, dykes etc would be extremely underwhelming. Kiffin has yet to win his conference for as long as he’s been a head coach. Aranda is unproven…kinda reminds me of diaz, so hell no to that as well
I never get the Sark love. Sorry but I just don’t understand it. Washington was winless when he took them over and he made them a 5 to 7 win a year team over four years. He then parlayed the 8-4 finish he had into the USC job. Went about 9-4 and after a 3-2 start the next year had to take off for his personal rehab. He then decides to rebrand his image by doing what everyone does: Let me go to Alabama so I can look real good running an offense with an overwhelming number of NFL high round players. He then parlays that into the Texas job that Tom Herman was doing better at and has now lost SEVEN games this year, including six straight. Texas is 4-7 and can’t win a watered down Big 12. This isn’t the same conference that at least had A&M, Nebraska and Colorado in it back in the day. It seems the worse the Big 12 gets, the worse Texas gets. Yeah, they should ROLL in the SEC when they get there.
I think Bikki is Schinnick’s agent.
An unusual name. I assume he is related to Don Schinnick, the Colts LB in the 1950’s and 1960’s?
Edit: Yes, Pete is his son.
Miami could do worse. They won’t hire him though. Too risky.
What do you guys think of Matt Campbell?
Amazing with all of Texas’ resources that they still can’t win.
The buyout is paid to the school if their coach is poached. Thus, a coach can’t say screw the contract without paying the school the buyout.
Also, you are failing to account for the fact that the supply of good coaches is less the demand, thus coaches are always going to have the upper hand.
This is ignorant. Aranda has had a top defense everywhere he goes (6 straight years in the top 15 defenses at 3 different schools). Diaz has gimmick defense. Aranda is going to go to LSU. Seems like a perfect match.
