As of right now, I want Diaz to get this thing going, but he’s starting to look less and less like head coach material… I don’t think it’s time to fire him yet. If we do, I I think it’s important we hire someone with HC experience…Strong Preference to Power 5 experience. Another preference of mind is UNLESS PROVEN, the new HC be an offensive mind or dual background.
Power 5 guys (Leaving the Wittingham, Patterson types out)
Kiffin (pipe dream)…Obvious #1 candidate. I used to hate him…But he’s tuned his sideshow down. The problem with him remains the same as it’s always been for me with regards to UM… Is this an insta-probation death penalty sentence?
Matt Campbell- At top of my board with Kiffin and Cristobal. And has some excellent coaches on staff including his veteran DC. What he’s accomplished there is excellent. Great eye for sleeper talent too and I think that’s important, because we’re not going to win battles with Bama and Clemson. He’s making a pretty penny at ISU though and may be happy there until an OSU or ND or Mich opens up.
Chris Kleiman- Can he recruit, and would he fit outside of the midwest? 4 FCS ships. Awesome coach and it’s carrying over to KSU’s improvement. Lot of questions as a UM fit though.
Dave Clawson- Underrated candidate imo. I’m not sure Jim Grobe could have recruited in Sofla… But Clawson seems a little less rough around the edges.
Mike Leach- Love the guy…Hate his disdain for the running game.
Mark Stoops
Greg Schiano- Doing his thing again at Rutgers. Insta- improvement. But he is being paid handsomely.
Brian Brohm- Star fading a little…I’m still a fan. Is a football-first guy for sure…not sure he would message well with UM admin’s side. Just a thought.
Group 5
One Name I absolutely love and I’d gamble with… Kalen Deboer (Fresno)- Looking like a future star. If have to bypass my power 5 preference it would be for him. Like Sub said…With UM’s budget constraints, it’s important to identify potential diamond in the rough coaches before they make a big splash.
Others: Fickell (Cincy) $$, Dykes (SMU)
To a lesser extent: Norvell (Nevada) , Napier (La Laf)
I’ll leave it up to you guys for the NFL names…Anyone love anyone there who is a REALISTIC candidate?
Keonta Smith too is a big one because worst position on team…But that’s nothing imo…If you don’t have the depth to overcome some injuries in CFB then you’re not managing your roster correctly.
I love how Lashlee said after the game…“We can’t play Cam Harris that many snaps”
Ummmm…Take him out then coach? He should have been as ready as the best of him and Franklin could be? WTF
Clawson intrigues me. His teams are well coached and always outplay their talent level. I would question his recruiting ability down here though but from a pure coaching standpoint, down the list for me but I’m intrigued. Same with Mizzou and BC coach, will be watching that game closely this weekend between those 2.
Doug Pederson - (#1 candidate for me. won the SB with a backup QB)
Doug Marrone - (currently the OL coach at bama. lead Jax to AFC title game).
Jay Gruden - lead washington to playoffs
Pat Schurmur - looks pretty good at Denver right now calling plays
Greg Roman - no HC experience but i think he would work well with the type of QBs in our recruiting area
Bill O Brien - HC experience, playcalling experience, college HC experience. currently bama OC
Josh McDaniels - playcaller and HC experience
Anthony Lynn - playcaller and HC experience
Clawson would need a few from our current recruiting staff to stay…Or guys like them for sure
I think both of the guys you mentioned have potential, mores the BC coach…He is defensive background, so I’d need for him to continue to really impress me. The guys I mentioned are a little more proven.
He’s pretty average imo…I don’t hate him, finds a way to lose most of the games that count. Has good reputation as a recruiter.
The problem is UM will look at a TRENDY candidate like him instead of delving a little deeper and see that someone Deboer is moving along much faster and a much sharper offensive mind.
i don’t buy that at all. NFL guys have to ‘talk the talk’ with millionaire pro players or risk losing the locker room, and thus their job. so i don’t see why talking to recruits would be any different. players want a coach with a plan and someone they believe in.
also the majority of the recruiting responsibilities belong to the assistants anyways. head coaches just need a few weekly calls to prospects and in home visits. but more importantly…they just need to win which sells itself.
a bit harsh no? Lynn has two winning seasons as a head coach and lead the chargers to the playoffs and also has a playoff win on his resume (2018 they went 12-4 overall).
i would say that’s above average performance for nfl coaches.
I doubt any former NFL HC would want to come here, especially if they have no prior college experience. I’d be interested in Marrone though, especially after his time at Bama. Probably a no go but he is obviously willing to coach college so it would be worth a shot.
not sure about that. how many of those guys are locks to get another NFL HC gig? i can see Lynn getting one because he’s a minority but many of those names outside of Pederson didn’t exactly leave an exceptional impression that will have franchises banging on their door again
He was overmatched…I’ve never seen a guy have less of a clue about things like clock management, going for it on 4th down, kicking dumb field goals, etc…than Anthony Lynn. And that includes Randy Shannon. It was basically every other week last couple years.
