Cristobal is overrated as hell. Cristobal is the epitome of fool’s gold, because as we’ve seen time and time again, he only wins when he can outtalent everyone and even then, he finds ways to lose to teams he shouldn’t due to poor preparation and game management.
Guess what? Mario isn’t going to have Nike or Alabama money supporting his recruiting efforts and unlike a guy like Butch, I don’t see him as some elite talent evaluator. Would I take Mario? Yes, but I don’t think he’s worth the money he’s going to command. In order for Miami to get him, they are going to have to pay him Dabo money and there are far too many question marks for me to justify spending that kind of money for him. If I’m going to spend top dollar for a guy, I want a guy with as few question marks as possible. I’m spending that kind of money, I’m making a run at Urban Meyer or David Shaw. I’m making a run at a guy that I know that barring something awful happening WILL WIN.
My realistic list involves(In no particular order)
Jeff Hafley–Guy that has shown that he can build a culture quickly, ambitious, emphasizes fundamentals. This is the kind of guy that will not win the press conference but will have Miami playing quality ball quickly. Will maximize the talent on roster.
Mario Cristobal–The splash hire with tons of question marks. If you can get him at an affordable level, then that’s great. That said, you don’t spend elite money on him.
Dave Clawson–A guy that maximizes the talent on his roster, winning at a place that it is impossible to consistently win at. He’s been on my radar for years. Again, not a flashy hire, just a solid hire that has a low failure probability.
Mark Stoops–Probably the direction I would go if the top end guys say no. Tough, inspirational leader that doesn’t put up with nonsense. Has coached at Miami before, so he knows full well what to expect. Again, a guy with low failure probability, even at his worst he will have Miami playing decent ball.
Guys that I would interview, but unless they really wow me may come up just a bit short on this go around.
Kellen Moore–This guy is a star in the making. Young, dynamic playcaller that brings NFL experience. He played under Petersen at Boise so he has seen first hand how a quality program is managed. If you have to go for a coordinator, I’d reach out to him first.
Eric Bieniemy–Quality coach, the kind of guy that when he gets his shot will do well. The problem is that I think he’s holding out for an NFL job.
