HAVE YOU EVER HEARD JON GRUDEN TELL THE STORY OF DRAFTING FARVE?
I BELIEVE IT WAS HIM, HOLGREM, REID AND MAYBE MCCARTHY…
AFTER THEY DRAFTED HIM THEY TALKED ABOUT GETTING FIRED IF FARVE WASN’T GOOD…
THAT IS THE PART YOU GUYS IGNORE…
ALONG WITH RUSS GRIMM TALKING ABOUT RUNNING THE SAME PLAY AGAINST THE DOLPHINS AND THE GREAT DON SHULA IN THE SUPER BOW BECAUSE THEY HAD NO WAY TO STOP IT…
THE GAME IS SIMPLE YOU GUYS MAKE IT HARDER THEN IT IS…
To say that the one person who decides on all players that come to a program, who touches all players, who hires all staff who recruits, evaluates, trains, and literally tells said players where to be and when to be there, who oversees the development and strength and rules of those players, and who sets the emotional tone and character of a program is only as important as which players he recruits, and how old they are when they play, are the only factors on what makes a team win or lose is mind numbingly stupid.
There’s something wrong with your brain. Stop spamming the board. Are we not monitoring posters anymore?
Lastly, even if it was as simple as you think then a coaches record by year 3 (6 as the controller of Miamis defensive recruiting) is still a direct result of if they are good at landing talent consistently and Diaz’s record is consistently not good so he still should go.
There are plenty of good coaches out there that have great records in spite of not having top recruiting classes. Indeed there is a direct relationship between having years of Top 5 recruiting and winning the NC. Nevertheless, even good coaches have their struggles. Look at poor Urban Meyer at Jacksonville. Meyer is a great coach, eminently successful wherever he has been Head Coach. If Meyer stays at Jacksonville and doesn’t fink out due to some “medical problem,” I think he will start winning at Jacksonville as he has done elsewhere. Meyer is a very good coach. Recall how his OSU team drubbed Alabama.
As 90scane has pointed out numerous times, Manny does less with more stellar recruits than do many other programs. Losing to FIU, the Louisiana team, and now Virginia is a clear indication that something is rotten in the State of Denmark. Manny needs to go. I support hiring an up and coming coach over an overly expensive hire. Give the reigns to an offensive coordinator who is killing it in the passing game AND in the ground game. Do not eliminate coaches from lower divisions. The process is much like recruiting and finding the diamond in the rough. Resist hiring an affirmative action window piece. Color is immaterial. Proven records are not. Find a Tony Dungy clone if you can.
Were it not for terrible referee calls, Mike Leach would have a perfect record this year. MSU defense against the rush is among the best in the college game. He got a QB almost out of nowhere who is playing lights out. Where is he getting his players. MSU is way down on the recruiting list. So, obviously he is coaching them up. I don’t think MSU can defeat Bama, but Leach is still going to upset favored teams as he did against A&M. Damn, we were stupid not hiring this guy. I blame that one on the communist Shalala. Donald Trump even advised the university to hire Leach. Trump really has a penchant for dead reckoning as was the case for hydroxychloroquine. Leach at Miami with South Florida recruits, developing good QBs every year, his pirate antics would have been a marvel, and the stadium would have been packed for every game as he did in Lubbock, as he did in Pullman, and as he will do in Starkville. Starkville? Who the hell wants to play in Starkville? But glitzy Miami is one of most alluring cities anywhere. Mike Leach is a quirky guys but a football genius.
I would love to see Leach at Miami. Guy is extremely ODD but he is gifted as a coach/playcaller.
I don’t know if Leach could ever win us a title but I think he could at least pull off a Coastal every other year and potentially an ACC every 5 years. My concern for Leach is more off-field with his love of Key West. Would he be able to focus on being a good coach living 100 miles from Key West? Leach isn’t a home run get Miami to the CFP type IMO.
I believe your analogy would mean Miami hires a good coach and spends the rest on landing the best players. It did make me wonder, does a school have the right to do sponsorship sales on behalf of the players to help them land NIL deals? Can they give up their own sponsorship dollars to help pay for the best players. If Miami could do that, I believe a good coach would have a chance of winning it all.
Not at all. The moneyball approach is looking at inefficiencies in the market and exploiting them.
There are two components to college football, coaching and recruiting. There is no draft, and you can’t pay players.
What are some inefficiencies in the coaching market? Nepotism, alumni, guys that didn’t get exposure to the right levels. The formers two are usually under-qualified, and the latter is over-qualified. Most GA spots go to guys that played there.
But it’s work to find the smart coaches that didn’t play at a D1 level, who are going to make it as soon as someone gives them a chance. You have to talk to 20 people to find 1 that is what you are looking for. Miami has not done that in the last 2 decades.
Inefficiencies on the recruiting side? Back in the day it was a no brainer to take Teddy or Lamar but we didn’t. I don’t follow recruiting anymore, but there are consistently guys that weren’t recruiting heavy that become great players? Pay a guy or two to find out why. Any players with an injury I would be looking at heavy (Justin Herbert had a few late P5 offers after an injury junior year).
I don’t think we need crazy NIL deals from alum to land great players.
The first step should be to fire James whose previous claim to fame was as AD at the University of freakin’ Maine. He hired two football coaches; Richt failed, Diaz appears to be failing. He had not much experience when Shalalala promoted him from Assistant AD to AD (by default) because the two supposed up and comers that preceded James both bolted for better jobs. As well, the basketball team is trash and the baseball team is mediocre. Time for a change. Let the new AD do a legitimate search to find the best available HC candidate, something James has never done. If James is a great fund raiser, keep him around in that capacity but he should not be AD any longer if Diaz fails.
IMHO, at least a 50/50 chance Miami loses all of its next 3 games, 75/25 they lose 2 of the 3. With 7 games remaining, I’ll be surprised if they win more than 3. I think they finish 4-8 or 5-7 maybe even 3-9.
Last Saturday night…,well Sunday morning really since it was around 12:45 AM …I’m watching UC-Davis …yes…UC-Davis (The Aggies…I believe) play exciting football against the Idaho Vandals. I am
sitting in front of my monitor …watching this game online …and all I could think was “…any of these two teams would beat Miami !”.
Offensive co-ordinators making mid-game adjustments. Kids playing with heart. D-coordinators constantly adjusting their schemes when line-ups weren’t working. Truth-be-told…I’d jettison the Miami coordinators AND HEAD-COACH…for any of the coaches on those teams …results be damned.
We have an HC …and an OC with damned little imagination. It’s the Shannon-Patrick Nix Show II
Before I begin a reply…take heart ! I’m going to have the board take up a collection to buy you a quality keyboard which has a caps-lock key that doesn’t get stuck.
Second:- I have never advocated for Tom Herman to Miami. His weasel-like behavior before jumping from UH was untenable.
Third:- The number of people on the board wanting Chad Kelly at UM …was in the very low single digits . Matter-of-fact anyone on here will let you know the entire board was turned off by his clownish antics and saw no upside to him being at Miami. His claim to fame? Being Jim Kelly’s nephew !
Manny Diaz has hit the wall. A local guy done good …who everyone rooted for…but ultimately seems unable to get Miami over the hump. Time to stop throwing good money after bad.
As for the Urban remark…I’m not quite sure where that comes from…or why you brought it up …or if by chance your train of thought strangely veered into the religious and you thought a mention of Pope Urban was needed hoping it might give Manny some divine inspiration.
