You can’t raise rates. Have you looked at Corporate debt service? It’s out of control. If they raise rates they will literally put thousands of companies (many of them large enterprises) out of business. And with them will come massive layoffs.
Sure they can raise rates! The rates weren’t at 0% last year. They just can’t raise rates right now. 2023,2024 rates will need to go up AND some of those large enterprises will have to stand on their own again or fail. Printing money and growing the deficit in the mean time isn’t a bad choice.
One heck of a bad position the FED and Congress are in.
They do have one more option: negative rates! I just would hate for them to go negative with all the corporate debt that is toxic.

Yes - they CAN raise rates and they SHOULD raise rates. They don’t have the political guts to do it because it will cause systemic failure when these too large to fail enterprises can no longer pay their debt service obligations.

At worst, let them fail after unemployment has dropped a large % and raising rates by .25% every quarter or half would not cause all of them to fail at once thus slowly transferring the wealth via large corporate failures.

The irony, the FED have given up the power of control to Congress without having any Law or Executive order passed. Now Congress can manage inflation with taxes. Rates will likely fluctuate some from 0-4% but I don’t think we will ever see 20% within the next 20 years.
As for a new global currency, there won’t be a new one. We can devalue the dollar without giving up control because we are so far ahead of Europe and China. China is going to be the next Japan. They will have negative GDP as their population ages out. Mexico and the USA are still growing their populations thus growing GDP. Our bigger risk is the Yang concern of growing GDP but a smaller job market due to advanced technology. This is why I’ve said the USA economy is service based moving for add.

DJ, there is almost nothing you’ve written with which I disagree. I don’t call government communism. I believe emphatically in urban zoning that allow variances . I find federal social justice dictates on zoning however as a communistic endeavor. The same is true with federal oversight of land. The federal government should not be in the land business. It’s ridiculous that the entire United States is comprised of massive federal holding that should be transferred into private hands.
I view willy-nilly immigration as our greatest problems. Trump had it right. A nation must have borders, and filling the nation with third world immigrants without resources or education, then subsidizing them on the backs of taxpayers is an absurdity. Then also we have the world problem of Islam which I regard as societal cancer. Read the Gates of Vienna blog to understand the sentiment of Europeans who are rapidly becoming strangers in their own lands, their culture being replaced by 7th century barbarism.
