Over 1 Million Job Openings…

…above the amount of people looking for work. Millions of Americans are literally turning down work to accept the more “lucrative” government money. Why is Biden trying to give even more money to Americans? How does this make sense?!?

I am not anti-government. I’m all for unemployment but this is out of control and severely damaging to our economy.

Our economy is currently on fire and Biden is looking to hand us towels soaked in gasoline to put it out.

I couldn’t agree more.

A friend of mine was in a restaurant with her family and it took forever to get service. When the less-than-intelligent waiter came and apologized for the delay (he said they were short staffed), she asked why. He replied by saying that there are more jobs than people because so many people died of COVID.

Uhhh, no.

There are more jobs than people because Biden keeps handing them money. Why work?

And don’t get me wrong, the stimulus money was necessary for struggling families and people out of work. I don’t understand why Trump and Biden essentially gave out all this money indiscriminately. My family and I are lucky - we didn’t need the money. Give it to someone who truly needs it. I donated mine.

At some point people need to stop depending so much on the government and get back to work.

Couldn’t agree more. Restaurants only having 1 or 2 servers, wait time out of control, it’s beyond ridiculous.

But you guys vote for and support this.

Cande- are you still a democrat?

You’re saying that because I voted for Biden I support everything he’s done/wants to do?

Did you support the checks that Trump gave out?

No - I’m saying you’re the reason for these results.

I was under the impression that all the extra umemploment benefits ended almost a month ago. Can you be more specific about what you object to?

Uh, no. You said:

But you guys vote for and support this.

Voting for someone doesn’t mean I support every initiative/decision they make.

I’ll ask again: were you ok with Trump handing out checks?

Yes

Biden has been open about how he’ll run the economy. You supported this by your vote.

Ok, so you’re ok with Trump doing it……but somehow not ok with Biden doing it. Got it.

There was a good reason for Trump to do it. It made sense and worked

And the argument can be made that there was a good reason for Biden to do it. Not sure where you’re going with this.

Now again, as I said above - I shouldn’t have been eligible for any of it. I don’t care which president gave it to me. I didn’t lose my job, I’m fine financially (and am grateful for that). Give it to someone who truly needed it.

The obvious downside is - and this also applies to the eviction moratorium - unfortunately there are a lot of people who took advantage of it who needed it - but didn’t bother to prepare for the eventuality you need to earn your own money and pay your rent.

At some point you have to take care of your own business.

That there is no good reason for him to do it?

We have labor shortages everywhere.

Right now, we’re docking container ships at port because we don’t have enough men to unload them.

Restaurants are begging people to come work.

This will only induce inflation because it’s stripping our capacity.

Unless you can offer a good reason for it?

I guess the question is (and I honestly would need to look it up) - was it like this when Biden’s first checks went out?

Update - so a quick look indicates the initial checks were announced in March. By then - unemployment fell to around 6% and jobs were being added.

This would certainly be an argument for not doing additional stimulus payments.

I suppose you could make the argument as well that there may be a little lag time, but as I said before, at least to me - I found it wasteful and unnecessary for both Trump and Biden to give these checks out so widespread. Save some money or give more to the people who really needed it.

I don’t think so. I think it would take a Trump-like Democratic candidate who bucks the trends and the norms of the left, to bring me back to the party. As things stand, you have the more centrist Democrats and the progressives. I strongly disagree with much of the progressive platform. The centrist Democrats are most responsible for electing Biden. F*** them.

Up until recently, Biden was pushing to extend unemployment but didn’t have the support he needed. If he had the support, he absolutely would extend.

The child care tax credit is to be made permanent.

Even his push to raise taxes on the rich and lower taxes for the poor which on the surface makes sense, is another way for the government to put more money in to the hands of the poor.

I object to Biden’s general position that the government needs to find more ways to put money into the pockets of the lower class. Again, on the surface, of course I’d love for the poor to be helped out but we have to acknowledge the unintended consequences of this gesture; people choosing government money over employment. Increased dependence on government assistance.

The New Democratic Party wants as many as possible suckling from the teat of the government.

I can’t disagree with any of this.

Thanks for explaining, Cande. It sounds like you oppose the general economic platform of Democrats as opposed to anything related to unemployment right now. Your mention of unemployment threw me off, as well as this quote:

As far as I can tell, there is no “lucrative government money” enticing people to stay out of work right now. In fact, part of Biden’s plan is raising the minimum wage, which entices the opposite.

So I guess that’s why I didn’t understand where you were coming from. But yes, you won’t like Biden’s economic plan if you disagree with general principals of his party.

305,

Assuming you agree with the premise that businesses with lower wage positions like servers or retail workers, are having trouble retaining workers. Why do you think that is occurring?
