Very interesting to see. If the stories are true (and I’ll never know so just food for thought) and his attitude, father, poor interviewing (bagging ones he didn’t want) etc. cost him, then Cam truly must have been everything at least one team wanted. And hearing Cam talk all year, reports of his splurging on team mates as well as holding them accountable, and watching how he carried himself on the field good times and bad doesn’t surprise me. Also, what an interesting window into what teams may consider “intangibles”. Maybe not that surprising…
We were so lucky to have Cam, if even for one season. Should Miami ever really challenge perennially, I’d have to give a lot of that credit to the momentum I’m hoping Cam has started. Credit to the staff as well. Sure am going to miss seeing him play for the ‘Canes.
Sanders got sandbagged by idiot writers and cockroaches with an axe to grind. I get the impression that his “attitude” was a matter of perception by teams who didn’t like/want a confident or unruffled draft prospect.
What really grated on me about the reporting/gossip is that none of the so-called journalists and mealy-mouthed writers like Adam Schefter never pushed back and refuse to tank the kid so close to the draft.
The only questions you could ask about the kid were “…is he coachable ?”…and “…does he win and command the respect of the offensive players ?”. The answer to both questions is “yes” .
“Anonymous sources” or "an un-named assistant coach " is just lazy B.S.
P.S. As a King of The Hill fan every time I see the name Cam Skattebo …I can’t help but laugh and remember “The Man Who Shot Cane Skretteburg”.
I’ll be pleasantly surprised if AB makes a roster. His brother was a better kicker and he got nowhere in the NFL.
I hope no one left school early because that almost never ends well. Yearby comes to mind.
Agents are poison to some of these kids.
Good luck to them all.
And teams passing on an entitled jerk with a pain in the ass daddy is not all that surprising. His interviews must have been abysmal for that many to pass on him. Maybe he will make a roster, maybe not. A player has to be really great for teams to overlook glaring negatives.
That said, the NFL works in mysterious ways. I never thought a team would be stupid enough to sign Watson with all his baggage but the Browns did and for a boatload of money. Crazy shyt.
Yes, * had the most with 14 players taken. The ACC had 42, led by Miami’s 7.
Only 5 schools[* (14); Georgia(13); Texas(12); Oregon(10); & Ole Miss(8)] had more players taken than Miami–who as we all know, had the #1 overall pick. Not a bad showing, if I say so myself.
All things considered, I still don’t know how I feel about claiming as “ours” a player who was here for a year and not really a developmental product of the UM. It’s like the Hall of Fame baseball player whose career was a split between two teams, which cap does he opt for on the plaque?
I mean, it’s great. But when you think of great UM players, will Tyler Baron or Damien Martinez make you think, damn, The U cranked them out back then?
Realize it is the college landscape, accept it. Same goes for any school, UGA, PSU, USC, you name it. Still, I can’t help but gravitate to players who came up as a recruit, worked their butt off for four years (probably three), and got picked in the second round. Just hard to get as excited about totals picked as in days of old.
I can respect that opinion… as a Steelers fan, it bothers me that Kenny Pickett has a Super Bowl ring…
But I would go out on a limb and say that if you asked any of those guys you mentioned which cap they would wear on the plaque, they would all be Hurricanes. The coaching staff brought these guys in and made them 'Canes. They went to war for Miami, and they were in the Miami foxhole. That is good enough for me.
Jose has a stronger leg. If you needed one of them to kick a FG that was 50+, who would you want?
Jose went 33/24 from beyond 40 yards, Andy 31/24, edge Andy but roughly equivalent.
Both were great college kickers. Andy reminded me of Carlos Huerta, Mr.Reliable inside the 40. Hardly ever missed.
Kickoffs/touchbacks, Jose had a clear advantage. Senior year, 59/79 75% v. 46/73 63% for Andy
I don’t see Andy making an NFL roster with that low a percentage of touchbacks. We’ll see.
Making it in the NFL as a kicker is a tough task. Many a great college kicker failed to catch on, Jose for one.
Jose was a first team All-American and the Lou Groza Award winner in his one year at Miami, 2020.
Mike Badgely is still in the league? but has bounced around a lot. Might still be on the Lion’s roster as injured reserve? He isn’t going to get his job back with the Lions because Jake Bates so he might be done…
Pat O’Donnell is still kicking around. He signed with Packers and is expected to be their punter this season.
I don’t think any other Miami kickers/punters are still in the NFL.
50+ is basically even at 6-8 for Jose and 7-10 for Andres
I would agree the stats show more touchbacks for Jose
I see no proof as a field goal kicker that Jose is better from distance even if he has a little stronger leg…and I’ve never heard of Andres having a weak leg so that is a big if. You don’t get drafted early 6th if you have just average leg strength but are mister reliable from inside 40. You get signed in free agency for that.
But kickoffs assuming Andy didn’t have an inordinate ratio of being asked not to kick it in the end zone are slightly in Jose favor. But as a field goal kicker Andy looks better from all distances. Two very good college kickers.
Andy’s kickoff game is rather weak. I recall a lot of his kickoffs being fielded around the 5 or so. Not so good. Most teams only carry one place kicker. I doubt they will settle for one who gets less than 65% touchbacks. He might make a practice squad. Much depends on the other kickers on their roster or who else is available. Time will tell.
Parker Romo’s kickoff touchback percentage for the 2024 regular season was 82.6%. This means that 82.6% of his kickoffs resulted in a touchback. He also had a 91.7% field goal percentage, making 11 out of 12 attempts.
Romo has bounced around the league for a few seasons. Played 4 games for the Vikings last year and did quite well. Andy may have a difficult task beating out Romo. He kicked for VT in college. Probably made some 60+ yarders against the wind facing Miami.
Meanwhile, Miami has signed two very iffy FG kickers as transfers who will likely make us miss the Borregales bros mucho. I’m not optimistic about the FG kicking this season.
