The Russians do have a capable army that has been building it up for the past twenty years. What I dread is raising the stakes in Ukraine. It’s bad enough that Biden’s idiocy is partly responsible for the outbreak of this conflict; it wouldn’t have transpired under Trump. There is no military solution to this conflict for NATO. Having the Ukrainians fighting to preserve the long-existing proxy war against Russia is an inane idea. Sending more weapons to Ukraine is akin to making certain more Ukrainians suicidally sacrifice their lives and have their nation demolished. They cannot nor will not win this war.
Since Russia will win this war, NATO should settle, and a settlement may turn out to have some favorable outcomes. The proxy war in Ukraine will be ended. The Ukrainian Army will be de-Nazified. Ukrainian oligarchs’ control of the country will be muted. George Soros will be thrown out of the country. American crooks and NGOs will no longer be able to pilfer with impunity funding to rebuild Ukraine. Ethnic Russians in Luhansk, Donetsk, and Crimea will be protected against Nazi persecution. Likely a portion of Moldova will be annexed into the Odessa Oblast.
Ukraine doesn’t need an army that threatens Russia or Russians living within Ukraine It has no need for Nazis… Luhansk and Donetsk are Russian and will probably after a short time be annxed by Russia. Energy will flow freely to Western Europe, and Ukrainians will be free from a corrupt government and affiliated cronies that seize by force their businesses. Europe will have a chance to steer Russia away from the Chinese sphere of influence. Nuclear war will be averted.
Putin has never lost a war. Presently, he is well-entrenched and has control of the military as well as the press. However, the Russian people want dearly to be Westernized and be free from authoritarian control. They love Western styles, restaurants, and culture. Putin cannot remain in power indefinitely, but to his credit, he has had remarkable staying power which is unusual in Russian leadership circles. The Ukraine problem has existed for almost a century, and it looks like Putin has resolved it. The answer in Ukraine is let Putin run it unless we’re willing to commit to fight for it, and neither we nor the Europeans are willing to fight. The sooner a settlement is reached, the sooner the killing is ended. Hopefully, Russia will continue its evolutionary march away from communism and authoritarian, corrupt govrnance. Bear in mind corruption has always been part of Russian governance, but Russia today is far less corrupt than it was under communism.

The Russians have been grifting their own military power over the last 20 years. MREs expired a decade ago, steel WW2 helmets, armor with 15-year-old balled Chinese tires, packages of plastic explosives filled with wood, and up to 30% of phantom soldiers filling out their ranks.
Ukrainians have seen plenty of their civilians who offered no resistance killed. Just today Russia admitted to kidnapping 1 million sovereign Ukrainians into Russia. This satisfies the technical definition of genocide. Ukraine would be stupid not to fight to the last man. This is not the USA’s choice, or Europe’s choice - it is Ukraine’s choice. (Remember the US offered to airlift Zelensky out of the country. He chose to stay and fight.)
Thankfully, the West is providing unprecedented support. It is so unprecedented, Putin had to publicly and meekly rationalize that it was impossible for him to predict the full Western response.
After all the screwups Russia has made, from sending elite paratroopers to their hopeless deaths, to canceling an entire front, to their own allies like Belarus and Kazahkstan refusing to join the fight, to the Moskva sinking… Probably the biggest headscratcher is why didn’t Russia make these moves in 2014. Ukraine’s army was a joke then.
Ironically, Russia’s actions taught Ukraine a lesson. For the last 8 years, while Russian oligarchs have continued to steal from the state and weaken their military might, Ukraine has done the opposite by receiving tactical training from the West.
There is only one reason Russia wants to “de-militarize” Ukraine, and it is because they are afraid of Ukraine’s military.
