Putin didn’t challenge Trump because Trump was giving him everything he wanted. Trump gave them our military bases, he hedged on Crimea, and he fought to remove sanctions against Russia.

It may not be. Russia does a lot of posturing itself as they have their own problems to deal with. But the situation is hard to ignore after Crimea and with what’s going on in Donbas.
At the very least, these measures are negotiations with Russia over gas, sanctions, NATO. I’m not an alarmist but it’s very easy to see how things could go wrong.

The big problem is that Eastern Ukraine and particularly Crimea have Russian not Ukrainian speaking people. Crimea has always been Russian. All the schools use the Russian language. It is naturally part of Russia not Ukraine. IMO, Urkraine is better off as part of Russia rather than becoming part of NATO. Unfortunately, Putin is a thousand times smarter than Biden, and Putin has the hole card of being able to withhold energy from Europe. Not having Trump in the White House is a foreign policy disaster although we will never go to war over Ukraine. Even Biden is not stupid enough to start a war with Russia.
Kazakhstan has a similar problem. A huge country, its northern half is Russian while its southern area including its capital is predominantly Muslim. Kasakstan instability is a threat to Russia, and I think more rebellions are bound to occur.
