Secretariat is the most famous race horse ever. He won the vaunted Triple Crown setting track time records in each race. His 31 length victory in the mile and one half Belmont was the stuff of legends. It will be a long time before a horse can match his time in the Belmont Stakes.
Yet, people don’t remember or are unfamiliar with what was said of a horse named Dr. Fager by his trainer John Nerud, “A horse never lived that could beat him up to a mile,” And, Nerud was right, Dr. Fager carrying a whopping 134 lbs ran the mile in world record, still unsurpassed time two seconds faster than Secretariat ever did, Dr. Fager had the most successful racing season in history and unlike Secretariat, he was never beaten by lesser horses.
