Whether you like it or not, it's time

Not long until the season starts. SoFla newspapers are flowing with meaningless “training camp All Americans” and youngsters are getting ready to puff out their chests with pride as they root for the home team.

So. What are three things you would like to see this season? You don’t have to be excessively positive. No one expects that. But please try and delve into the “why” so readers get it. After all, if you are reading this there is still some vestigial shred of fandom left faintly beating inside.

I’d like to see:

  1. Higher passing completion rate. Which hopefully translates into more first downs before it’s, say, third and seven or eight. Death by a thousand cuts. This likely means getting running backs more involved in the passing game. And, gulp, the tight ends. Gives the defense a breather too.

  2. Turnovers. More turnovers. Particularly interceptions. Everyone knows you are going to try and strip the ball rather than make a competent tackle. Low success rate, can’t count on these as turnovers. Maybe I am misremembering but it seems like a UM interception happens about as frequently as solar eclipses.

  3. Special teams coverage improve. Win the field position battle. No big kickoff or punt returns. Stay in your lane. Tackling competence. If a turnover happens due to a big hit that’s great (see #2). But don’t whiff trying to decleat someone and then they take it upfield 34 yards. Don’t put the defense on the, err, defense from the first snap of the possession.

A consistent running game would be nice. A secondary that knows where to line up without looking confused . A defense that doesn’t make every opposing ham & egg QB look like Tom Brady.

Shooting for the stars, I see.

1) Better secondary pursuit and pressure. No joke, I’d love to see opposing QBs need to check down and struggle to find openings. Just a little. Every second helps.

2) Sane play calling. Similar to your third and short desire but coming at it from offensive play calling. We need an effective game plan for success.

3) Short yardage push. We’ve seen glimpses. We have bodies. It’s all meaningless unless the big guys up front can push in short yardage situations to pick up that first down or get into that crowded end zone.

  1. To be in the top five collegiate teams in the sacks and tackle for loss categories.

  2. To stop 3rd and 4th and long backbreaking conversions.

  3. To continue a la Cam Ward to release the ball QUICKLY.

  4. To be never stopped on 3rd or 4th and one yard.

  5. To employ two RBs in the red zone.

  6. Never to see plays without an RB in the backfield.

I’ll keep it simple, make it easy

  • Give me a team that gets better as the year goes on, not worse. I’d love to win this first one, no doubt. But let’s not have it be the best one we play all year long. Or is this just too much to ask for? Watching us for about 20 seasons now, it might just be.

Mario needs to finish top 10 this season and contend for a chip or this fan base will fly that corny ass banner against him.
