What do conservatives think about immigration these days?

With the Ukraine aid being a sticking point for the right wing of the Republican party, it seemed like a month ago something very unusual would happen: The Dems would agree to immigration stipulations set by the GOP.

This was an impressive development and, for just a moment there, I was happy with both parties. Both sides were compromising, both sides were acknowledging the importance of their opponent’s issues, and stuff was maybe actually going to get done, even if incrementally.

And now it seems like Trump is blowing up immigration reform? Like, Republicans want to campaign on anti-immigration so they don’t actually want to put any fixes into law now? They’d rather make a media stand at Eagle Pass and blame Biden, the president who was willing to compromise?

I never thought I’d see the day Republicans pass up a golden opportunity like this.

Really? They haven’t been interested in governing in years.

The numbers were on an upward trend for a while including the Trump years. But at least Trump made it a point of emphasis, one of which he was meant with resistance

Now I’m not saying the GOP isn’t grandstanding bc they clearly are.

Bu now the numbers have absolutely exploded since Biden and his executive orders. Why not just reverse his own executive orders? Or why attach Ukraine’s aid to immigration stipulations?

It’s the GOP that attached immigration to Ukraine aid That was gonna be the compromise. “We’ll give you war funding if you give us immigration reform.” Biden said okay and was prepared to do it.

And now the Republicans are stalling.

They’re like a dog chasing a car. They finally caught it and don’t know what to do with it.

They’re afraid border reform might make Biden look reasonable. That it might take away Trump’s talking points in his campaign. Meanwhile the border needs to be addressed…

Agree with all of that, but again…Why has Biden’s stance lightened now? Election year.

I mean Biden and dems NOW admit is a problem? Thanks captain obvious.

I thought there were some good things in there, some bad. I think the 5,000 in a day to trigger the closure of the border seems pretty high. But, changing how they file asylum, really making it quite a bit harder was really good. There appeared to be some really good points made in it. Some good, some bad…usually the mark of a relatively good bill.

The number that legally became citizens appear to be relatively in line with the past

The border apprehensions skyrocketing

That’s a freaking bunch. Now, those are apprehensions, so I assume we can only speculate at how many are getting in. Not sure how to figure that part out with any sense of reality

I’m not sure what executive orders you’re referring to, except that he rescinded some of Trump’s which just stopped all refugee admissions, essentially to nada. I looked a few days ago and didn’t see much of a change in anything else, which surprised me. Trump appears to have taken the refugee admissions to very least possible. Maybe that’s good. I dunno.

While this is true and I somewhat agree, keep in mind this isn’t something Biden is campaigning on. This is a compromise. This is something the Republicans said they wanted and the president said, “Okay, fine. Let’s trade and get both these things done and move on.” A

And now the Republicans are playing take-backsies.

But as far as the bigger picture with immigration, I actually thought Biden kept a lot of Trump’s processes in place. He did change some stuff, but Biden gets a lot of flack from the progressive wing for not doing as much for immigrants as maybe another Democrat president would. I think he’s been pretty reasonable.

Now, yes, for sure there is a border issue. I have always said, for all of Trump’s faults, I can respect a president ACTUALLY TRYING to accomplish something rather than kicking the can down the road. I didn’t agree with all the reforms, but he was the only president in30 years who actually dared touching the problem…
