In January of 2022, Warden published a list of horror movies. I remember it, because it was arguably his best post of all times, and I saved it on my computer, and I’ve made it point to watch some of his recommendations, which, and I hate to give him too much credit, were wonderfully entertaining. I have had a lifetime love of Fantasy and SciFi, and thrilled to the books of Heinlein, Assimov, Bestor, McCaffrey et al. I even loved the pulp fiction of Robert E Howard, a very strange man.
Last night, I watched one of my favorites, District 9, a South African low budget dystopian flic which I really enjoyed. I am certain Warden has seen it, and I’m interested in his opinion of it.
District 9 was pretty decent. I had higher hopes for it though.
It feels weird to call it low budget but it did only cost $30 million. They re-used a lot of the props from the unmade Halo movie, and it was produced in part with Peter Jackson.
For something a lot more gritty and lower budget, look up the original short film Neil Blomkamp made in 2005 that this movie was based off, Alive in Joburg.
Well, thanks, man. I appreciate it. Horror movies are my soft spot…for some reason a slasher flick while going to sleep relaxes me. Not sure what that says about my inner soul.
Love District 9. The CGI was amazing even though it was from 2009. Thought it was cool that it presented aliens coming to earth and there were no wild world changes, not coming to save or destroy us, they were just working class “prawns”, people still just went to work the next day. The xenophobia/refugee narrative is obvious, of course. Overtly inspired by District 6 in apartheid South Africa. Common themes, of course.
Great movie.
District 9 was more a comedy than a horror movie
You know, that’s really insightful of you. That’s potentially why it wasn’t on my list of horror movies, nobody has ever called it a horror movie, and Bikki never claimed it was in his original post, citing it as a dystopian flic."
Though, considering its a science fiction/action movie exploring xenophobia, social segregation and the like…thinking of this as a comedy is kind of revealing on your part. Again, thanks for letting us know its not a horror movie.
It’s not a musical either. Did you want to let us know that, as well?
