VT looks a ton better this year on offense. That QB has some good wheels on him which means he will get yards against our slow MLB. Hopefully Diaz spies him with Smith or the Striker.
UNC looks like it lost 4 of its best skill players. They aren’t explosive on O.
Sam Howell certainly didn’t look like a Heisman candidate. VT defensive secondary took away several TDs. UNC lost their two RBs from last year, and their vaunted rushing game was of no consequence against VT. Justin Fuente really needed this game, and VT looked much improved over last year. The VT QB is an interesting kid. He has sprinter’s speed and really adds a dimension to their offense.
VT TE (I think it was Mitchell) looks athletic and did a great job blocking. Didn’t see a lot of targets in the passing game but I wonder if he’s going to give us fits when we play.
VT defense wasn’t slow/plodding. UNC tried to stretch plays laterally without much success
For a ‘seasoned’ OL, UNC’s OL was certainly pedestrian. I think VT only rushed 3-4 and still got pressure
Burmeister played well but I didn’t see anything that was a gamechanger
VT handled UNC pretty solid, left points on the field though with key misfires
Great to see someone else suck it up on 3rd down efficiency (2/10, oof). Thought we were in a class of our own for a few years there.
Are UNC receivers slow or VT corners that fast? Not a ton of separation and made Howell’s night harder
Overall: Not writing UNC off just yet, but they’re def not the top 10 team sold in the press. Howell doesn’t suck, but isn’t as fearsome without good OL/WR. I’d give VT a bump in terms of defense stronger than anticipated.
Notice how the teams we play always look better in the early part of the season than we thought they’d be? OK, so UNC may not be but VT damn well might be. Michigan State pounded Northwestern and Appalachian State beat East Carolina too. So we get to start thinking about those out of conference games a bit more after chalking them up as wins.
It wouldn’t shock me to see Bama take a small step back after the Miami game on the D side. They likely lost Chris Allen for the year (the one that abused Scaife). Too Too may have a broken arm or dislocated his elbow. Those are two of their better LBers. Even if the back-ups are great, it means the 3rd stringer will see snaps and Miami did pretty good against the 2nd and 3rd stringers.
Teams we play: Duke lost to UNCc! FSU plays ND so we will see what happens tonight. NC State is a good team and most thought they were top 3 in our regular season. GT lost to NI! Pitt played umass (are they FCS lol) UVA played william and MARY (FCS) UNC lost to VT which helps us a ton as we play VT at home. Their QB looked better than Hooker.
App State and MSU won games but I wouldn’t say they looked better than I thought they’d be.
Of all of the outcomes, VT over UNC made me think VT improved at QB (fast runner) and UNC lost way too much talent at the skill positions to be top 10.
Miami should drop 5-7 spots at most. Miami with Couch, Justice, and Chaney starting is a top 20 team. Add in Brooks, Cave, LT, Bolden, more JW/Cam, Tae in the second half of the year, and we could end up near the top 10 with a trip to play Clemson.
Speaking of Clemson, they need to find a better QB. They look like a top 5 team without a good QB which means they could drop 1-2 games against better defenses. Even if they make the CFP, I wouldn’t expect them to win.
