I’m not sure he’s selling out Ukraine yet. Trump, above all, wants to look like a winner. He knows settling a bad deal will make him look bad. And with as much as Russia is hurting these days, giving them too much will look bad.
Much to his supporters’ chagrin, Trump has NOT stopped aid to Ukraine.
In fact, he is going ahead with Biden’s deal to extract rare earth minerals from the country in exchange for aid.
Trump has even walked back pronouncements of this peace deal pending consultation with European allies, because obviously he can’t just proclaim that they will guarantee Ukraine’s security without their say so.
Trump, I think, finally understand that he doesn’t magically have more wiggle room than Biden did. Problems don’t magically go away by talking tough. So we’ll see what happens.
That said, there are very few avenues for Ukraine to realistically regain their lost territory. Neither side of this war is able to achieve a true breakthrough.

Trump is right about one thing, There will never be peace between Russia and Ukraine with Ukraine being made part of NATO. Russia perceives a NATO Ukraine being tantamount to a Cuba armed with nuclear ballistic missiles. Ukraine will have to cede large areas to Russia including the Donbas, and most of the northern Black Sea coast.
I see Trump ending the war rather quickly. I don’t see Zelensky remaining much longer as head of the Ukrainian state. If Trump withholds armament, Ukraine has no alternative but to accept peace Russia won the war more than a year ago, and there was never a conceivable way Ukraine could prevail.
The ideal situation for all Western nations is to improve relations with Russia whose leadership has always regarded the nation as a European nation despite it borders extending far into Asia. Putin is the most pragmatic leader in Russian history, and I think Trump, who is also very pragmatic, can work out some surprisingly good economic deals drawing Russia back into the Western political sphere.
