Centrist would be a better word for what he is trying to describe. Centrists have diverse views, moderates may or may not have fully partisan views, but they are not extreme. Centrist implies views that may contradict or not be perfectly balanced, moderate implies being on one side of the spectrum.

I may fall into the centrist category as well. There’s a lot of overlap with moderates if they aren’t the same thing.

The reason I prefer the term moderate is because I’m very explicitly against extremism, no matter what party you’re in. I am fine with slow, gradual progress. I embrace that our government often takes 2 steps forward and one step back. So I very literally believe people should show some moderation in their political beliefs.
