During the so called Age of Discovery, the Portuguese arrived at the small archipelago of islands some 400 miles off the westernmost point of the African continent. The islands were uninhabited, so the Portuguese settled the lands, and today Portuguese is the language vernacular.
The worst Atlantic Hurricanes are sometimes called Cabo Verde storms where they originate although the islands are rarely hit by high strength hurricane force winds. Actually, the islands have a rather arid climate and sparse vegetation.
