Thoughts on Next Defensive Coordinator

I like the article and agree

Great players sometimes don’t make the best coaches

Ed just seems different but like you said he might not be interested

Baker isn’t getting fired. He is Manny’s boy.
It seems unlikely he would be canned.

Clemson was the only team that lit UM up, maybe NC State? Other than that,
not too many points were given up. Edit:Until UNC.

Rumph might be fired because of his recruiting woes. Probably a good position coach
but has to be one of the worst recruiters in memory.

Does Reed live In Miami full time? I was under the impression that his family was out of state and did not move down.

I don’t know that Reed wants to break down film of practice for all the second teamers every day. Monitoring halls on Friday nights. Checking Freshmans grades every Monday. If he does give him a chance. But that was not my understanding.

So some of you guys do not want a coach with experience from other schools? They are broken toys? Retreads? So you would want a Doctor fresh out of college with no experience to do surgery on your kid? Or do you want someone with experience who has worked thousands of days doing the job and seeing lots of things?

I want a Doctor that is successful, knows his craft, holds people accountable, good evaluator of talent. Same as a DC. Although the Doctor to DC comparison is a bit of a stretch but I get what you’re saying.

Maybe throw something at Muschamp?

He better!

I want a doctor who can teach kids how to tackle in the open field! :face_vomiting:

“I will answer the question about staff the same way I did a year ago”

I hope this is true. I didn’t think for a second Enos would be fired after just one season. That was a real power move. I hope Manny can pull a repeat.

Trying to keep it is as realistic as possible (i.e. no Venables, Steeles, although I think Muschamp may be gettable) I was thinking maybe Glenn Spencer for DC. Was up against in year 1 this year at USF…But at previous stops he had a very quick impact…And runs a version of 4-2-5 which Diaz is probably married to and we have the personnel for right now (and only getting more extreme as we have many possible striker types and continue to bring them in)

I like Freeman from Cincinnati too, but he may be attached to Fickel…Both are Ohio St. alums

I’ve said this many times. The man also can recruit. It’s a double win. And don’t think for a second He wouldn’t maximize the skills of Taylor, Williams, and others.

if you guys want to laugh, and then cry… I found this thread about Blake Baker

https://www.canesinsight.com/threads/blake-baker.143720/#:~:text=247%20lists%20his%20salary%20at%20%24140%2C000.

I’m guessing a lot of guys that posted there wish they could delete this thread.

I wouldn’t get your hopes up guys. Manny is going to see this year as a step in the right direction. He’s not going to let this one game dictate his decision.

I think Blake has one more year to go before he gets canned. Just don’t see it. If it was going to happen it would have happened already.

Manny took care of the Enos issue promptly last year. I hope he does the same with the D this year

I agree if it’s only one game.

It’s a different story if there were several games this season where the defense vastly underperfomed.

It’s a different story is Manny needed to take over the D for 1 or 2 games.

And it’s a VERY different story if the D has a pitiful showing in the bowl game, because a 2-loss skid at the end of the season is NOT a marked step forward.

There’s also the noise to deal with. Manny wants to be regarded as head coach material instead of another Golden. He might make the tough decision because he’s expected to.

So I’m cautiously hopeful…

I think Rumph will pay the price this year and Baker gets another year.

Reed certainly has had stupendous defenses for many years, however, I don’t think Miami has a chance of securing his services Charlie Strong is a solid defensive coach and would really buoy our recruiting.

Rumph is really an awful recruiter. He was unable to recruit even those kids he coached in high school. He’s reportedly a charming fellow, but we’ve struck out too many times recruiting CBs. Recruiting is part of the job. We need someone who can close the deal. Rumph can’t do it.

I’d like us to hire a young up and comer, someone with energy, fire, and magnetism. I thought Muschamp was splendid when we was younger. After watching the UNC debacle, witnessing the worst run defense in college football history, I think Baker needs to be axed. UNC may have been the worst game I ever saw a Miami team play, and I have been a fan for 60 years.

I guess your memory is failing you. Clemson for Golden’s last game, UVA for the last game in the OV, Syracuse 66-13…

Yes, we sucked but we’ve had worse games. This came down to DL not playing their gaps, LBers suck, Carter should have been a LB cause he can’t play in the open field.

I’m good for a new DC, CB, and DL coach. Patke, Banda can stay or go based on the DC.

My opinion on defensive staff…

Banda- Awful coach imo…Annoying person who was unqualified for the job. BUT…He has done a 180 and proven himself as a recruiter. He works hard in Dade on kids of all positions, and his safety room is well stocked

Patke- Whatever. We can do better. I’d replace, but there are bigger probs on this defense.

Rumph- GTFOH

Baker- I’d fire…Too many chances. If it was just this year I’d refrain from making a snap judgement because when you do as much work as I do on CFB you’d realize just how many bad, unexplainable performances there has been for teams in this fkked up covid year. But UNC got like 780 out of 820ish possible yards in this game…What in the living fkis that? FIU last year, UNC both years, too many defensive duds…We do nothing well except get pressure and most of that is from physical freak Des, some acquired via portal for one season…and are moving backwards in other aspects of defense

Stroud- He’s getting old. I see no reason to fire unless that is coming into play. Seems to be doing well and recruiting very well.

Don Brown is now available. bet LSU snatches him up or maybe NFL. of course we will not get involved at all with our incompetent leadership.

I would love to have him at Miami, but damn… he was making $1.5 M at Michigan. I suppose the tarnish of getting fired might come with some lowering of expectations of demanding that high a salary, but I still don’t see Miami being able to afford him–
