Thoughts on Next Defensive Coordinator

Its beyond obvious that Baker needs to go for our program to take the next step.

I know everyone is mentioning Muschamp as an ideal replacement, but I imagine that will be a very tough pull from SEC territory…specifically LSU who i’m certain will fire Pelini asap.

If the rumors are true that Harbaugh is done at Michigan…we need to throw the kitchen sink at Don Brown. guy is the TRUTH. yes i know Michigan has been terrible on D this year, and hopefully that actually scares other programs away…the team has quit on Harbaugh. has nothing to do with Brown.

you can almost guarantee an annual top 10 defense minimum with Brown if we could make that happen.

Like all things University of Miami…can we afford either?

Charlie Strong??

Baker isn’t going anywhere, ESPECIALLY if we win out. He isnt about to fire his boy after we went 10-1.

BUT

I’d take Don Brown in a heartbeat even though he would probably just promote Banda or some shit. It would have to be someone whose scheme aligns with his, which isn’t too many. Muschamp will be getting paid 1M+ next year to be someone’s DC. Charlie Strong wouldnt be bad either.

The more realistic option is to hire T-Rob before someone else does. Can Rumph and land him and that will go a long way for our DB recruiting and play. A++++ upgrade.

i can get behind charlie strong too actually. recruiting should be solid.

Whoever comes in will need to be someone with an attacking mentality similar to Diaz. That’s what he believe in and it worked for him in the past.

I’d like to see a younger guy who is as smart as these younger OCs and can go chess move for chess move. I don’t know who that is.

If we’re taking senior guys, Muschamp, Brown and Strong would be names I could get behind. Is T-Rob really all that? Also, what do you guys think of Lambert over at Marshall? He’s an old dog with HC experience (Charlotte). They’re dominating right now. Or Bates from Pitt?

I’m just surprised Manny isn’t the Co D-coord. I know he gives input and assists during the week like any coach, but I don’t think he’s actively inputting on D during games?! I may be wrong.

I think Manny is more involved with the D than the O, but not enough to be considered a Co D-Coord and I am fine with that. I know that the D has struggled, but as a first time HC who is still learning on the job, Manny needs to be more focused on HC responsibilities.

If Baker can’t get it done on his own, then he needs to go. The problem will be who Manny would be able to and willing to replace him with. Is there someone out there that fits Manny’s style/mentality (b/c I don’t believe he is willing to change defensive philosophy) that is available and affordable

I’ll hold on Brown from Michigan for now

Rutgers had no issues moving the ball on them…

I am not advocating for Brown (I don’t know much about him other than hearing some people advocate for hiring him), but I do think that while one should certainly evaluate recent results, that they may not tell the whole story. Manny is a perfect example of this, he got canned from Texas when that team and the D were struggling, but later it became evident that the root of those issues was likely not Manny.

Again, not saying that Brown is necessarily the right answer, but considering Michigan seems to be in a somewhat similar situation to Texas towards the end of the Mack Brown era - maybe the poor performance of the D has other factors at play than Brown’s lack of ability.

michigan defense under Brown:

2016 - #1 ranked total defense
2017 - #3 ranked total defense
2018- #2 ranked total defense
2019-#11 ranked total defense

before michigan:

2015 -#1 ranked total defense (at BC)
2014-#11 ranked total defense (at BC)

you’re really going to argue with these results? guy is a defensive genius …how can anyone argue with this and decide we can do better?

Eh… A lot of their defensive woes were the result of terrible recruiting on the defensive side of the ball. The program overall had become complacent sure, but the defense was falling apart in addition to that. Give Diaz top talent and he can give you an exciting D. The question was/is whether he can sustain that.

I am starting to doubt Manny will do anything about Baker or Patke. He was very complimentary of the defense after the Va Tech game.

I’m ok with Patke so long as Rumph is shown the door. Baker can even stay so long as Manny is calling the D and letting Baker learn.

Hrm… Tough call. Rumph is gone but we keep other dead weight?

90s, Respectfully, I’m not okay with that. Manny needs to be a HC. Baker is useless. He’s the very first that should be shown the door, followed swiftly by Patke and Rumph.

I’d be ok with Rumph and Baker getting replaced. If you replace Baker, we could be looking at wholesale changes to the D. I’m not sure we need that as much as better recruiting at DL(mostly Richt classes) and CB(Rumph). Miami isn’t likely to spend on someone like Brown which means we are likely better off with Baker/Manny and replacing Rumph.

Patke also manages our ST which have been pretty good this year.

Now if Miami is going to spend money, bring in Brown and replace anyone he wants replaced. Let Manny be the HC!

He also coaches our LBs who have not been very good. Maybe we just struck out on a lot of the recruits there?

And has STs been that great? We have a punter and and K (both transfers) that are awesome, but other than that what has been great? We can’t seem to find a PR that can even catch the ball 50% of the time never mind be a return threat. Our KR game has been pretty non-existent. Our coverage has been fine for the most part, but we have let up a return or two for a TD.

I realize that returns in general have been less emphasized, but is Patke getting credit just b/c our K and P aren’t terrible like recent years? I don’t think he has done a terrible job on STs, but is it enough to overcome the LB situation?

Also, I have no idea how he is as a recruiter - that could certainly sway things one way or the other.

We’ve had ok recruiting and downright BAD luck with injuries. Steed’s knee, Brooks’ foot, McCloud’s brain

ST has been good, not great.

Pros:
Elite K/P
Multiple blocks

Cons:
One returned kick
Below average return game

Again, if we replace Baker then I’d like the new DC to decide on who he wants to keep. The most important on the list IMO is replacing Rumph. We can’t go into 2021 with Rumph on the staff. If we replace Baker and not Rumph, I believe it will be a big mistake.

Miami has to figure out a way to combat the SEC, Clemson, OSU paying players. IF we can do that, even Rumph likely could land some elite kids that hate his guts but will play here 3 years.
