The real question right now is what will the right do with Trump? They have a major problem on their hands. Do they invoke the 25th amendment? A more direct question is addresses the basis of this - are trade deficits inherently bad? Peter Navarro built a career of stating they are bad, period. That’s put him on the edge of economics for decades, far far out of the norm. We see that Trump built the tariffs based upon flawed math - taking the trade surplus from each place and then dividing it by the # of goods. That’s how we got tariffs on places with no inhabitants other than penguins, because once, long ago, we received a single shipment from there.
We are the world’s reserve currency and that allows things like sanctions to matter. If we weren’t, sanctions wouldn’t do shit. Foreign countries need US dollars to trade. They get those dollars by selling goods to the US. This fuels the trade deficit - but also creates demand for US assets like treasury bonds, stocks and real state. We focus more of our manufacturing on high valued industries like technology, financial services, defense, aerospace, etc. We don’t make textiles. It’s too cheap and it’s almost entirely automated anyway. Capital inflows help fuel investment. Trade deficits are balanced by capital account surpluses, buying US debt, investing in US companies, and buying property or creating new businesses. This all allows us to buy cheap, imported goods and maintain a higher standard of living than if everything had to be made domestically. Because imported goods are cheaper, it helps keep inflation low.
Now, to be fair - it also his domestic industries like manufacturing, can really hurt regional economics like the Midwest, and the debt accumulation is a long term risk.
But, the notion that any trade deficit is bad and thus must be attacked is counter to basic macroeconomics. Blanket tariffs on the whole world, like Smoot Hawley, decimated our economy and the global economy at that. Don’t forget the role our Great Depression played in starting WW2.
We don’t import our cars to Europe because our cars are fucking huge and their roads are small. We don’t import our chicken to Australia because we put chlorine in our chicken and they think its fucking gross.
This blanket, ever changing, tariff the whole world will only lead to us handing over global influence directly to China almost immediately. Why would you do a deal with the US when you can’t even count on Trump maintaining a position for a week, a 5 day work week and backs out on deals he signed himself? Also, we spent decades exploiting everyone with the World Bank while China actually goes to places like Nigeria and builds a bridge. No cons, no putting a single bridge the dictator can use and taking all their mineral rights for it…just building a fucking bridge and then offering a trade deal. Why would anyone trust anything from the US any longer, ever again?
