The New QB Acquisition Paradigm: Blue-Collar Basics

With the new five for five rule and only one transfer allowed you will see less roster turnover. I think you will start to see the move back to high school recruiting and developing. You can’t take one year rentals and have to replace 30-40-50 guys out each year. It is not sustainable.

Hopefully that bears out. To me I have always thought that part of being a fan is the ability to follow the growth (or in some situations the lack thereof) of a young player. They come in hyped and struggle freshman year. Get some traction sophomore year. They blossom junior (and hopefully if they stay senior year). Or a guy who barely got a scholarship turn out to be a stud with some seasoning.

It forms a bond with the player and the team. Because it transcends a given season and draws you back in the following seasons in a way a “rental” cannot always do

Just look at Samson Okunloa - five star OT who played in against kids who he was just bigger and stronger and better than. Gets to Miami and everyone is good. You are now in year 4 of his career and he is going to start. Offensive and defensive lineman espcially need time to develop.

And I’m glad he’s stuck it out and earned his spot. Hope the kid has a great season.

I feel more worried than ever about losing kids that won’t wait. Maybe Miami is structuring their NIL deals in a way that incentivizes kids to hang on? Maybe it’s just because he’s in the right place for aspiring OL’s? IDK, but I’m hoping Miami has properly leveraged the new rules in a way to get back to the top and hang around.

The way that we ran over OSU, AM and Ole Miss was impressive. We beat the SEC at their game and it felt like watching the old ‘Canes again. And if it weren’t for the blocked punt TD we may very well have had our 6th Natty!

Mario and staff have really built this team up the right way.

Saw this online. Well written without necessarily breaking new ground. But had never seen this website before, will probably bookmark it.

I’ve been away for a couple months so just catching up. Interesting to see Mario developing the QB room and announce his future plans for it. I do wonder if the annual portal craziness will calm down a little under the new rules. Let’s see what happens.

I personally lose investment and interest in teams if they change their character too much year to year. When you have star kids sticking around multiple years, the team story blends into a longer narrative that makes you care.

Saban got out at the right time because he didn’t want to deal with this year in and year out.

Dabo chose to not go the portal route for awhile, I think he does now but not to the extent that other teams do.

Mario has used it masterfully. He has used it to plug holes and complete while bringing in the guys that they can develop and stick with the program year in and out. The portal is good to fill needs but not to build a team…

Agreed and it’s nice to see us at the tip of the spear on this stuff. Couldn’t have capitalized better on these changes imo. Reminds me of butch with track scholarships etc finding a way to use what he could of the system.

I agree that Mario and co have been outstanding. I think the next transition to filling smaller holes via the portal with better recruiting across the board determines our staying power, but we couldn’t be in much of a better spot thus far.

Go ‘Canes

Saban got out because the “bagman-advantage” was negated by NIL and the transfer-portal meant a loss of control over when and where an “unwanted” could go on a transfer. People who have had/are used to total control can’t stand to have it taken away.

Dabo is slowly finding out that you either adapt or go extinct. A man who never met a pay-raise he didn’t like …yet moaned and was the ultimate hypocrite about kids getting some compensation while he was making millions per year.

Good point on Saban.

I think we all can agree that the portal/NIL system initially setup was trash. Personally, I’m still not in favor of NIL. I can survive one portal window, however.
