The Great Carl Madison

Carl Madison is the greatest coach I’ve ever known, as well as one of the finest humans to be found on the planet. I worked as an assistant for Carl at Pensacola High School. In this case, Carl was not the head coach in name, just in reality. That year, due to Carl’s genius Pensacola High came out of nowhere and won the state championship. Winning state championships was something that Carl was good at doing. He won a bunch of them.

Carl was also an exemplary educator. Students loved and never forgot him. They came to him as boys, and he turned them into men, indomitable men. With young people he was like the Pied Piper of Hamlin. IMO, he was the Nick Saban of Florida High School football.

Carl’s teams were famous for double team blocking. Carl used to tell the kids two of you can block one of them even if they are Leroy Jordans. His teams practiced deception and many times camera men filming the games would be fooled and the play never made it onto the film. He faked them out of their shoes. Carl won with big guys but most of the time he won with scrawny but tough as nails country boys, boys taking ag courses at many schools where he coached.

Here are two links about Carl, one from Wikipedia, the other from a rural country newspaper operating in north part of Escambia County near the Alabama line.
