I wonder if he has any input on the defense at all at this point?
If Diaz was smart he’d let him take over the reins…Very good defensive mind, guy could probably walk into the room and get 80-100 DC jobs right now. For instance if there is a coaching change…I’d be perfectly satisfied with him as the next DC (probably won’t happen, but I’d be happy with it)
I guess there is a health issue with him that is keeping him in the office/booth? Does he travel to away games?
Agree 10000%
Only thing is, Diaz aint kicking anyone to the curb to make room for him unfortunately. I’d def be in support of him sticking around for whoever the next guy is.
I will say this…There is clearly something X and os that are being exposed in Diaz’s gambling defense BUT
I do agree with him that tackling is the biggest problem…Even average tackling probably saves us a drive and TD worth of Mich St. offense this past week. The 2nd biggest problem is probably talent, but imo how long can it take if Diaz isn’t evaluating talent correctly. Sun Belt players are always going to have trouble tackling big time RB for instance.
But I’m right with you in being fine or even preferring a scheme change…Or at the least tweaking.
Player mistakes that should be correctable Tackling (wrap up and wait for help to arrive vs trying to kill the guy.) Bad angles Missed assignments ( 3 on 6 giving up sacks) Penalties Lack of effort
Coaching mistakes Personnel choices (Ivey, Jennings on D, Wiggins on O)- why aren’t they pulling guys for the above? Bad play calling and game planning Lack of adjustments be it in game or over the year(s)- see adjusting to handle the counter better. Bad talent evaluation - how many linebackers left south Florida over the last 4 years to become elite or near elite players at non-top 10 schools? 5-10? How many WRs? Roster management- if you take portal kids that used ICs for the class then depart after one year, it greatly impacts your ability to play at or near 85 kids. Then the coaches complain about not having enough players to practice tackling… who’s fault is that again? Thankfully the NCAA has provided Miami 7 additional counters for portal kids thus likely keeping Miami at 85 from this point forward.
Things that are mostly outside of their control Injuries (This year: KSmith, Chaney, King, Rivers, Campbell, Clarke…)- how many medical retirements? Refs missing calls
My HS coach use to hammer home that he was fine with forced errors but you’d sit if you committed unforced errors. Forced (you did everything right and the opponent made a great play). Unforced (turn overs, missed assignments, dropped passes that were on target…). We play sloppy ball with tons of unforced errors. These forced errors are in both category 1 and 2. You can’t fix #1 without addressing #2.
Just couple random comments…Good breakdown and agree on most of it.
Wiggins is the #3-#4 WR on this team. I’m fine with that.
Can’t agree enough on talent evaluation and selection at the LB position. We have like 1 that can play somewhat (Smith, I’m optimistic…Needs to polish up but can play albeit a little undersized)…
I believe a couple that have proven that they can maybe be developed and do some things Flagg and Brooks…I’m not sure and doubt either should be starters in any top 20 defense. Steed made some plays against Mich State…Gets blown up on others due to size. I have no problem with Steed being a backup Will here, none at all. Is TAC completely a flop? Huff got some snaps…Is he a flop? No freshman is ready at all? I don’t expect freshman to be the answer consistently but I do expect you to recruit one here and there that can be a surprise and beat out shitty upperclassmen above them.
Same thing at corner…We passed on so many kids that are at least ADEQUATE elsewhere. Where is Dunson? Is he so bad he can’t unseat Ivey? Again if so…Then in 6 years of running a defense’s personnel decisions that is on Diaz. WE KNOW DJ IVEY CAN’T PLAY. WE KNOW JENNINGS CAN’T PLAY. Why are they on the field and if your younger guys can’t play at their level in year 2-3, then you made a mistake recruiting them and can’t evaluate at a power 5 level.
As for recruiting this year…I see a lot of the same. And also does Garin Justice know he’s allowed to offer some offensive linemen? What is going on there?
