SNL is unwatchable. Hasn’t been funny since the late 90’s.
Trend is fairly consistent, actually. Avg episode rating stays consistant over time and edges up mostly. Dips slightly in 90s, but nothing notable.

My beef with SNL isn’t even the politics. I think it has always slanted somewhat left, although it does appear to be in overdrive now.
My beef is that the skits tend to be childish. They aren’t witty. They rely on a very immature style like repeating the same punchline over and over. Bad imitations (although they did do a good job recently on the political debate impressions for both sides).
But gone are the days of Phil Hartmann who could imitate anyone in an uncanny way. Baldwin can’t hold the guy’s jock.
The news segments used to be witty and diverse. Now they are all about politics. Way too much.
I watch sports and shows to escape politics…. I don’t want to be dragged back in during my diversion.

Phil Hartman’s depiction of Clinton was great. It was funny and spot on. Same with Reagan.
