I know we’re all hostages until 2036 when the GoR ends but we need to get out now! How much worse do you think this disparity will be as the years pass and the SEC and B1G continue to add to their annual financial hauls while we’re settling for our scraps? We can’t stay on the field in football, baseball or basketball now.
I think I have said it before but eventually the SEC and Big Ten will become too large to succeed and there will have to be another major round of realignment. Look at Kiffin’s comments. If one believes that a middle of the pack SEC team deserves to go to the playoffs then the playoff structure is already flawed. It’s time to (as the overly beaten phrase goes) “say the quiet part out loud.” They think the playoffs should be 80% (if not more) SEC & Big Ten and everyone else go pound sand.
But this isn’t really sustainable either. There’s lots of other schools with the deep pockets to compete. So, logically, things need to evolve to the point where, let’s call it D1 football, gets restricted to all the teams who can afford to compete. Do away with conferences altogether. One big “conference” if you want with divisions. Or go to AL and NL model. Who cares. Point is that every team should go back to a “grueling” schedule so there’s no (or minimal) griping about who got in or not. There are no (very few, just because you have money doesn’t mean you won’t suck) cupcakes on the schedule. So the teams with the best records have definitively proven they belong. No my 7-4 team is better than your 10-1 team.
Conferences just don’t make sense any longer and one has to think that bowls per se are also on the way to the dustbin of history.
You gotta remember that once ESPiN and CBS jumped into bed with Mike Slive things were never going to be the same . SEC teams now believe that they are Notre Dame 2.0…entitled to everything.
Whether it was BCS or this new model there were some coaches who didn’t belong but thought that they did. Hell Butch and a young Ken Dorsey beat Bobby Bowden and Chris Weinke …yet Bobby cried to the BCS that he deserved to go to the title game instead of Miami. And what happened ?! They sent the Noles to play Oklahoma …where they promptly lost to a team that the Canes would have waxed to a smooth finish.
