After the past two seasons, it’s hard to argue that FSU should not fire Mike Norvell at season’s end.
However, FSU has about $60M reasons to retain him as head coach.
In contrast, Billy Napier’s buyout at Florida was a more modest $20M; still a lot of money to blow but a lot less than $60M.
The AD and university presidents at FSU and UF should be fired for making such awful decisions that waste millions in taxpayer dollars.
Mario’s buyout is also about $60M but if the team wins 10 games again this season, his tenure has been successful, not perfect by any means, but given what he start with, the team is world’s better in terms of the roster.
If Miami can secure a great transfer QB, or one of the QB’s on the roster steps up (unlikely), then the making playoffs is very doable. All the good teams have very good/excellent QB’s. Beck is a decent QB but he has serious flaws. Given a better QB Miami goes undefeated this season.
Given a better head coach
Given better officiating there is only one loss
Given a better running game
Beck is no bigger a reason than any of those, although yes he was awful against Louisville, and he has to wear that.
All the good teams have very good/excellent QB’s.
Ehhh…Beck is probably still better than Carr (I like Carr to be better long-term) or at least a wash… And has been better than Mateer, although Mateer’s legs probably even out the comparison. He’s definitely a better thrower than Marcel Reed at Tamu, but again if you like Reed bc of the run game I wouldn’t argue.
Beck is a very good QB when he has a clear pocket where he completes more than seventy percent of his passes. When rushed, Beck’s play deteriorates as seen in the Louisville game where he threw four interceptions. This was the knock on Beck his last year at Georgia; too many interceptions. Beck’s success is also hampered by Dawson’s offensive scheme which does not employ enough motion or deception. Amazingly, for the first time this season, during the Va Tech game, Miami fooled the cameraman on one play. That was my favorite play of this entire season. Too, Dawson’s rushing game is woefully underperforming, largely due to the same duo of lack of deception and players in motion. You’ll note that Beck rarely turns his back to the line in handoffs going wide. When you turn your back, defenders lose sight of the ball. Last year, we had more RB chunk plays as Ward executed counter plays excellently.
Next year, I see Dereon Coleman starting at QB. Coleman will markedly improve the rushing offense. Coleman will win out over Luke Nickel unless we go after a QB in the portal, something I think is very liable to happen. My first choice of QBs would be Sam Leavitt now at Arizona State, although his foot injury is a concern. Almost tied with Leavitt IMO is the North Texas kid Drew Mestemaker. I like Mestemaker because he has been coached by Sam Brophy who coached Patrick Mahomes, Cam Ward, and John Mateer. A healthy Sam Leavitt gives us an experienced QB who is a threat rushing the football as well as passing it. Nevertheless, this Mestemaker has some kind of gun for an arm. Forget about Emory Williams whom I consider a clumsy Tyler Van Dyke clone.
We came in unprepared for UL…took us being down 2 TD’s to adjust. Our DC was not prepared. We were lazy…that’s loss 1 and we still could have won.
I disagree that the refs blew the SMU game. Sorry. We had plenty of chances and did you happen to notice ALL OF THE PROCEDURE PENALTIES ON OURSELVES? Yeah, we got some bad calls but WE lost the game.
Beck is out best option at QB. Like Dorsey, he needs a clean pocket.
Who do we have on our roster that you all think can be our QB next year or is this another portal grab?
The reason FSU did not fire Norvell also had to do with they just sued the ACC and had to pay a ton of money in lawyer fees. They also just built a brand new FOF for the football team and they renovated the football stadium. They also gave their OC and DC three year deals. Giving Norvell a major buy out was a big deal but the other cost in one year made the decision easy. FSU has a very difficult schedule next year so why saddle that with a new coach. I personally don’t think he is a bad coach. He made a major mistake in putting too much of an ephasis on the portal. It is not sustainable.
I really like Coleman. I think he is the best HS QB has signed in awhile. As for Beck - I feel his arm is not 100 percent. He is like a RB who tore his knee up and does not always trust it. Against Louisville and SMU he had field goals guaranteed. He made bad throws. The throw in the SMU game he double clutched. His lack of ability to beat defenses with his legs in long yardage situations also why I am not a huge fan.
