As I suspected in earlier post, injuries might turn out to be a problem for Sam Leavitt at LSU. Presto, he is reported as already injured and will be held out of many spring activities.
Since we landed Mensah, I am liking more and more Mensah being our pick to take over as Miami QB. My change in sentiment is due in part to Elite80’s high opinion of his past record. Playing behind a Miami offensive line should add a measure of comfort to Mensah when dropping back to pass.
Not related to the QB discussion, I remain concerned about Dawson’s preoccupation of favoring A gap rushing plays which too often last season resulted in being stopped short by opposing defenses. It just took too damn long for Dawson to call wider rushing plays. Indiana ran a rushing blitz on EVERY first down. I noticed it watching film. Why didn’t Dawson? When Fletcher was released to rushing through other gaps, he ate up the yardage. Next year, perhaps we should start first rushing wide, then hit them with some A gap surprises.
One thing I am rather enthusiastic about is Jackson Cantwell playing OT next year. Cantwell has Olympic strength, one of the foremost discus throwers of any age in the country, I am expecting to see next season some mauling taking place by Cantwell, and I am compelled to think he’ll be able to open rather abruptly some rushing lanes for our running backs. UM has produced some great OTs, Bryant McKinnie, Leon Searcy, Francis Mauigoa. I hope Cantwell will be added to the list of our All-Americans at the OT position.
