Rankings Week 9

Miami is 5 in the coaches’ poll, 6 in the AP.

I don’t like not having divisions. We could literally win out and get hosed. It’s not likely, but possible. Either way, should we end the season undefeated, we are in the playoff.

How do you mean we could win out and get hosed?

Clemson, Miami, Pitt, Southern Methodist

All undefeated in the ACC currently. I assume they’ll take the two highest to play for the conference so if we win, we’re fine. But lose one and we don’t control it any longer.

(and honestly, I don’t think we should if we lose with this schedule)

I’m not sure if that’s an argument against divisions though. If we lose one and Pitt is in our division and undefeated, we would be just as hosed, no? Divisions are good in you’re in a very weak division compared to a stronger one, but that’s not the fairest system either.

I want divisions. It doesn’t make sense for a conference of this size to not have divisions.

I think if we win out, and lose a close game to Clemson in the ACC Championship, we’ll still get in.

I’m not making an argument one way or the other. U asked how do we get hosed. I told you how. Like it, hate it. Doesn’t matter to me. Wanna avoid it? WIN OUT!!!

Sorry, this I just don’t agree with this year. I’m willing to take it yearly on a case by case basis. But this schedule has been largely a trash one. Half our wins so far are vs the state of Florida. Who’s been our best win? Louisville? VT? UF? I bag on Notre Lame every year for doing this so I have to be fair. Their schedule is like ours but at least they beat TAMU and they have USC at the end. Should the N. Illinois loss be a deal breaker then? Maybe but for THEM you know it won’t be. SC and TAMU carry more weight than what we’re playing so they’ll get a bit of a boost.

So if Clemson beats us by a little, I can see a 10-2 SEC or B1G team getting in over us and you’d have to look at the schedule and understand why. Not saying it should always be that way or that we had much choice in our opponents this year but we needed some better hitters on the schedule for credibility and in the event of a close loss somewhere.

The ACC without divisions is like MLB before it had divisions (pre-1969) when the entire American and National leagues were in a single pennant race. No playoffs unless teams finished tied which rarely happened. One day, some executive thought, “We are losing a ton of money with no division races and no playoffs” and they created the divisions.

No system is perfect but I think divisions make sense unless it is a very small conference.

Clemson is not as good as people think they are.

True, but I still have lingering PTSD from the last times we played them

Why? We won.

True. I meant more 2020 and 2022. It’s an irrational fear, but it’s still there lol.
