Skeeter, what gives you pause about Mensah?

Oh most definitely

Holds the ball forever…Some accuracy issues especially on short and intermediate stuff…Fumbles a lot. Again I think he has a chance to get drafted and can be one of the top 8-12 QBs in CFB next year.

In all fairness to him, the Duke pass protection was nowhere near what ours should be even IF we lost Bell to go along with Maugaio

Stats are inflated, Duke played a ridiculously weak schedule of defenses even by ACC standards

So maybe not worth $8 million? :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

TMC, the reality is every quarterback can be picked apart. Miami needs a guy that can find the open receiver. Mensah is very calm in the pocket. I never feel like it is to tough for him. He can make all the throws asked of him. Are there guys with bigger arms, sure. I think you give Lincoln Riley this kid he wins the Heisman Trophy.

Both Kickers commit to UM

K Jack Olsen, Northwestern/Mich State- Played one year at MSU before transferring back home to NW. 6th year of school. 1 yr to play 1. Accurate kicker but not past 50. Favorite to win the job but not a lock if Weinberg improves. Has never done kickoffs

K Jake Weinberg, FSU- Local productive from AH Delray. Big leg and tons of potential. Will do kickoffs after excelling in that role for FSU as a redshirt frosh. Only went 12-19 on FG, so is expected role will be long distance FG and kickoffs for sure. And he will have a chance to win the full-time FG job moving forward. 3 years to play 3

How about Hoover, who Cigs is getting from TCU? Can he give them anything near what Mendosa has next year?

Definitely has a lot of strengths and an above average but not rocket arm. There are others I liked better in this year’s portal class but overall there wasn’t a ton. Again imo, the kid holds the ball way, way too long.

But it’s a good get.

I do think Dawson needs to wake up and recruit better at the HS level. Neither he or Heatherman seem to be much for recruiting. But Heatherman imo doesn’t need to be, while Dawson at least needs to somewhat. It is dangerous practice to think you are automatically getting a top portal guy every year (but what do I know? Maybe CMC knew all along they could), and the process probably should be changed so teams can’t just rape teams for players at the last minute, especially if it breeches a contract. JMO

This is very good news. It is easy to overlook these guys. Until there’s six seconds left to make a 48 yard FG for the win. Every year UM should be in the hunt for a top ten HS kicker. I know I am in a distinct minority here.

Mensah’s stats are definitely not inflated….unless you think all ACC QBs have inflated stats.

I didn’t watch a ton of Duke games, but did watch their bowl vs ASU. I did not come away thinking Mensah holds the ball ‘way way too long’. maybe 1 or 2 plays he could’ve got rid of it quicker but 95% of the time the ball was out

I’m not seeing confirmation that Mensah has committed to Miami…did I miss it? Just not seeing it anywhere…

What I AM seeing is alleged tampering on our part for him…

It’s a dangerous world in college football, the last thing that WE need is to have lawsuits coming at us for alleged tampering when we seem to have the ship heading in the right direction.

IMO they definitely are lol…

Duke’s schedule was ridiculously weak, even by ACC standards.

Their non-conf game the best defense was Tulane (Uconn and Ill were all offense/no defense to an extreme) or maybe Tulane and Illinois are comparable?

UM was the clear best defense in the ACC Then Lou was next… The closest and maaayyybe in that same group with Lou those was Wake, he had a pretty good game against them.

He did have a big game against Clemson I’ll give him that. CU, VA, SMU were all close to round out respectable ACC defenses, the rest kinda sucked. He did have a respectable game in the ship against VA, after struggling the first time around against them

Again I like the kid, I just don’t understand a lot of the slurpfest with him. Should work out well if he comes to UM

Mensah is good, but not $8 M good…

We are seriously going to pay $8 million for this kid???

ASU’s entire team was out…35 players including I believe 7 defensive starters and 6 out of the top 10 defensive backs. If I’m off I’m not off by much.

Even by today’s standards where every other bowl has a ton of opt outs…ASU was probably one of the 5 or 6 out of like 70+ bowl teams most heavily hit by injuries and opt outs. And any opt outs that Duke had were on the defensive side, maybe 1 or 2 offensive guys if I remember correctly.

The 8 million is probably an inflated number.

I am no fan of the portal except for the QB position. Reason why is because no matter what the QB position is one where guys need time. Jameis Winston RS at FSU. Maybe Trevor Lawrence and Deshaun Watson were elite as freshman. Dontae Moore started as a freshman at UCLA and basically got chip kelly fired. He goes to Oregon and RS and was a RS So this year and still struggled. Reality is back in the day the qbs Miami has landed would not start until year 3. Bernie was a true freshman but not sure many of the other guys were. Also these you guys don’t want to wait. Arch Manning waited. He was not ready this year but did finally come around by seasons end. Miami does need to start to blow teams out next year so the backups do get game time.

What I read yesterday-not sure if it was linked in this thread or was from Rivals or Scout-but we’ve pocketed $20 million from this playoff run and under the ACCs new revenue distribution, we get to keep it. Mario’s philosophy is that we will spend money on the QB position, even if its every year. $20 million buys a few of them. We’re not dialed in on the high school QBs and needng to land a 4 or 5 star one each year.

The thinking is that if that QB turns out to be good out of high school there’s no guarantee he won’t get poached in a year or two so you’re never going to benefit from the early time and financial investment you put in to land him and develop him. We would rather do the poaching of somebody else’s QB who they’ve developed. Plus there’s no guarantee the high school player will be a good upper FBS player. If you snag your own upper classman QB, you’ve seen enough games to know he can play so that eliminates that guesswork as well.

So we haven’t seen the end of the QB raids. Under Mario it may just be getting started.

** I just read through this thread and rationalcane touches on this theory about half way in. This is exactly what the UM philosophy is currently. Might mean overpaying for QBs but they’ll be more proven when we land them. Also means stressful moments until we do.

The little bit of film I’ve seen … yeah, get this guy.

I doubt Miami pays him $8M but $5M, sure.

Good size, great pick to TD ratio and completion percentage and runs well.

Much better than anyone on Miami’s roster after Beck leaves.

And he has two years of eligibility left.

Plenty fumbles though.

Fure.
