Portal Update

DT Jacquez Carter from Ohio State to UM

We loved him out of high school but finished 2nd to OSU. We took his teammate and fellow DL Newtonn last year. He played 6 games so didn’t redshirt. 4 to play 3

Looks like a good pickup. Only question I’d have is why bail on Ohio State so early? Just not a fit? You have to know that at a school like that you wait your turn unless you are Jeremiah Smith. Maybe homesick.

Mario needs to pull a rabbit out of the hat. Though we have an outstanding recruiting class, there is uncertainty in filling the most important position on the team.–QB. I’ve never been too high on Emory despite his ideal size. I can only speculate. hopefully speculate, that he has improved from what we’ve seen of him in the past. Yet, I remain skeptical about his chances successfully to step into the shoes occupied by the stellar Cam Ward and uber-experienced Carson Beck.

I am curious about the development of Luke Nickel. He certainly lit it up in high school stewarding his Milton, GA team to a state championship. Notably, he still remains behind Emory on the depth chart. Third team QB Judd Anderson’s play at Miami has been deemed “unremarkable.”

Incoming freshman Dereon Coleman shows some promise, especially with his ability to improvise after making his reads. Coleman weighs only 165 lb, has a pretty good arm, and high school films reveal a measure of poise as a game manager. IMO, Coleman could challenge others on this list in a competition for the top job.

Presently, our best remedy remains getting a portal QB. The best QB if available is IMO Ty Simpson whom I think would be a terrific QB at UM. Simpson has a better arm than Leavitt and rushes the football much better than Beck.

Another possibility, if Lanel Kiffin doesn’t get him, is former 5 star, committed to USC, Husan Longstreet, who has RB skills rushing the ball, a true multi-skilled athlete.

Unrelated, I regret losing TE Brock Schott to Indiana. Schott, I think, should have been tried out as an outside LB. He played offense and defense in high school.

Colorado OT Jordan Seaton to the portal. Went to IMG. Did UM ever pursue him out of high school?

Yes pretty much everyone did…We really weren’t in finalists

UM is expected to make a play for Seaton just not sure they will break the bank.

do we not have a general manager in place? 3rd year in a row where we wait until the last minute to sort out the most important position. i don’t see any QB out there to bail us out this time.

Ummm…I’d say we played it perfect the last two years?

And again there weren’t that many great QB out there. It’s going to be a free for all for the top 2 or 3 every year. We’ve been spoiled, but we aren’t gong to get one every year.

just because it worked the last 2 times doesn’t mean its the best approach. how is that working out for us now?

What other approach aren’t they taking I guess is what I’m asking?

In the original post here I’ve gotten rid of players that have committed elsewhere or that it has been confirmed we are no longer interested.

I think we should offer Husan Longstreet. It looks like Simpson will be a first round pick in the draft. Longstreet would certainly give us a dual threat QB, and conceivably he could materialize into the steal of the year. The fact that Lincoln Riley pursued him is a testament to his talent, however, he was beaten out as a starter by Jayden Maiava who has been mentioned as a Heisman candidate next year. Longstreet will require coaching to refine his skills, but he’s got the wheels to improve our ground game. More and more, the dominating college teams, the really physical ones, rely on the ground game. Smash mouth is really back in fashion, even in the pro game.

I think the problem is that we’ve had no luck in developing qbs that we have faith in for the future. None of the high school takes show great promise.

Why is everyone so down on Nickel?

He’s supposed to beat out Beck or something?

Can’t promise him the starting job though obviously, and that may be what he wants.

He’s never proven a thing, so he would be brought into compete.

High school qbs take time to develop. The qb from oregon is nowhere near a finished product and he is in year 3. Manning was year three and did not improve until the last few weeks of the season.

Crazy idea. What if Miami has something in the works with Moore from Oregon that he doesn’t go pro. Like with Beck.

I watched lots of Nickel’s HS films, and I thought he exercised great presence as a game steward. He has a decent arm and can deliver most passes given time enough to execute them. Perhaps we can depart from our last two years, and run a very controlled offense much the same as Brock Purdy does for the 49ers. Purdy was a three star QB entering Iowa State. Whoever plays QB next year will be surrounded by offensive talent. Our WRs are going to be elite. Mali will be 19 years old next year. Both Mark and Marty are proven commodities as ball carriers. Add this freshman Dereon Coleman, and we could find ourselves with a two-headed monster at QB. If we don’t get a QB through the portal, we use what we have, and who knows. These kids mature rapidly. They’ll be playing behind a talented offensive line, hopefully Bell stays, and Cantwell is the strongest football player presently residing in the USA. Three quarters of all successful offenses consist of a strong rushing game and short passing schemes, that is, controlled-offense that sustains long drives.

Mario is a superb judge of talent. So far, he has done well in the present portal. Getting the kid from BC was a coup. Miami doesn’t need a five star QB. Miami needs a competent game manager. If we pick up Longstreet, I firmly agree with Skeeter, he’ll have to compete for the starting position.

Supposedly UM offered Simpson $6.5M.

It’s amazing to me the vitriol elsewhere on portal QBs versus coaching up high school QB recruits. Man, if people had knives there would be blood everywhere. I think I am on the record that if we never coach up a high school kid to be able to start “on a championship team” by their junior/senior year than Miami has a problem. And high school QBs will look elsewhere during recruiting.

That said, part of the coaching up is real game reps versus good teams. Or you have what people call the Greentree All-American. Reading through reams of opinion it appears that teams with championship aspirations should have 1-2 “okay” emergency backups at any given time. Otherwise, keep poaching experienced QBs from other teams. There’s “no time” to let an inexperienced player gain experience on your team. The time is always now.

I cannot help but conclude this is here to stay. Basically other teams become your “minor league” and when the QB has proven elsewhere “major league” ability then poach them for $$$. (And maybe poach someone to be an emergency backup - Poffenbarger?). If this holds water then I’d expect Miami to get your basic *** high school QB going forward. With maybe a few better exceptions where Miami is the “dream school” or the kid really believes in himself.

If Miami was my “dream school” I’d go somewhere else (credible) where I can start early, build up a proven track record, then transfer to Miami.

LSU just signed Longstreet.
