Police under no legal obligation to help you

So, many on the right are accusing the left of wanting to eliminate police with “Defund the Police.” Of course, there are some who have those intentions, but mostly, the movement was to reassign some police funding to other resources better used to fight those specific issues, like mental health officials dealing with mental health issues that aren’t involving a crime. Couple that with so many police forces having military hardware and dressing like they’re a Ranger squad going into war, while driving a corvette or an $80,000 truck with a police sticker on the side, and it’s relatively understandable in that context. The police deal with crime. I think we should let them stick to what their jobs are intended to do.

That being said, turns out, they are under no legal obligation to protect you.

Our Libertarian friends at the Mises Institute even agree

Recently, police watched a man drown

In Uvalde, they didn’t do shit outside of trying to lock up parents who were upset (2 instances I’ve seen on video of cuffs being put on parents).

So, if the police do not have to do the jobs by which they get paid and an overwhelming level of power and an overwhelming level of exception if they fail or kill someone they shouldn’t, and then an overwhelming level of protection from the courts afterwards…why do we have them, to issue traffic tickets?

I’m not stating I’m in favor of eliminating police, but in the paradigm we are currently, in, wouldn’t it be advantageous to revise both their jobs, their purpose, their protections and their funding?

Unbelievable.

I suppose then the Secret Service is under no obligation to jump in front of the president in order to take the bullet meant for him?

We better see criminal indictments coming out of Uvalde. That these police didn’t engage the shooter is horrifying. They are literally trained to get that guy to point the gun at them, and not at kids.

This is circumstantial and egocentric, I acknowledge that - but, there are LOTS of cops in jujitsu. It’s not a strip mall type of setup, the guy who owns and teaches is one of the top 20 all time competitors. He was the Abu Dhabi World Pro Champion, IBJJF World Champion , ADCC World Champion…some of which he did multiple times. Another coach is his little brother, Brazilian wrestling team winning national titles and a former Navy Officer. Another coach is a coral belt, which…well, look that shit up. Another is another black belt IBJJF World Champion, Brazilian Nationals champion, etc.

It’s a competition gym, with the #1 brown belt in the world in his weight class, etc. So, what I am getting at is it’s not a typical gym for casuals. It can be pretty hardcore, so cops go there. It’s right beside a police station.

They can’t fight. I’m not sure what else to say, or how to word it to get the point across. The only one who can is a 60 yr old guy who teaches cops and he can whip some ass. But, literally 5 other guys, all cops, couldn’t do shit to you without a gun. It’s a serious let down and kind of scary. One seems so wound up and so upset when he gets his ass kicked or can’t control position that you think he’s going to shoot someone.

I’m little. I’m 5’9", 185…should weigh 165-170 if I lost the weight I need to. I shouldn’t be dismantling these dudes, most of which are over 6’1" and outweigh me by 20 plus lbs. We have a girl who’s 5’3", maybe 120. She can wipe them out in a row, all within about a minute and a half, each.

I’m not confident in our police force. Too many seem like pussies with guns who were picked on in high school

This is settled law for decades. The police have zero legal obligation to put themselves in harms way to save lives.

Doesn’t that seem like a bad thing?

It absolutely is.

Kinda makes that “to protect and serve” slogan irrelevant.

Damn. Apparently you only get it after having an active black belt for over 30 years. Didn’t know that was a thing.

Jujitsu isn’t like others. 5 basic belts outside of coral. Each one takes years. Average black belt is about 10 years or more. UFC proved that it is the most dominant martial art, easily. If you don’t know it, and it goes to the ground…you have about a 0% chance of coming out of it without going to sleep or tapping.

But, the point I was making is I’m not even that good. I’m 45, belly, smoke, smokes weed (which is common in this sport), and small. The highest I’ve placed is bronze at tournaments, but compete at 195 lbs, so they’re fucking big dudes. But, still…these cops can’t fight, dude. They’re just terrible. Outside of that old guy, in 3 years, not once has one of the cops ever tapped me. Again, I’m not even the best blue belt there…not even close.

Okay, I need to intercede here and defend the officers in the case of the drowning incident.

This man practically committed suicide. Police told him not to go in the water and he did. He wasn’t bein detained, he wasn’t under arrest, he just did it.

Any professional lifeguard will tell you, if you don’t have flotation and proper training, attempting to save an adult from drowning will likely result in you drowning as well.

Also, this man jumped into water right next to a dam. The reason there’s no swimming allowed is because it’s a death sentence.

It sounds like the police did exactly what they should have done, ie. call for a boat unit to attempt to save the jumper.

And now back to the rest of your post…

This makes sense.

Years back we had a family member - a fire fighter - die in the line of duty. Obviously it was horrible, made worse by the fact the fire was rules an arson (so officially a homicide). My former neighbor, a retired cop, told me afterwards that he was a cop for decades, had been shot at, etc. and that cops and firefighters always rib on each other.

He said he’d never go running into a burning building.

Didn’t read it. Should have. I fish…I get it.

Were I a policeman, I’d ignore getting involved with any perpetrator who might pose a threat to me physically or to my career. This would insulate me from winding up a political prisoner like Derek Chauvin. I would also declare myself a member of a tribe: the Ashkenazi Tribe rather than being a less privileged white male. Like Elizabeth Warren, I have high cheek bones like my grandfather.
