Pitt Game Condensed/Highlights

Miami played surprisingly well.

Most of us were concerned about this game all year. Pitt has a good team, the weather was cold but fortunately sunny which makes it much more tolerable. And Miami came to play which was nice to see. They had a good November for once.

Beck threw one bad pick but otherwise played well. He still has a tendency to force throws to guys who aren’t open; the receivers saved him a few times like on that last TD by Daniels.

Baby Jesus played great as usual. That kid is gonna be a Heisman Finalist in the coming years.

So, the team finished 10-2, better than most of us thought. I couldn’t find a prediction thread for 2025 on this board so maybe we didn’t do one this season? But, I was thinking 9-3 was likely, 10-2 and 8-4 possible, 11-1, 12-0 and 7- 5 less possible. I’m happy with 10-2.

Beck didn’t get hurt and UM didn’t lose a lot of starters to injuries so that helped the cause.

Bauman looks like the real deal at TE. He should get more touches.

The team looks very good. The talent on the roster is noticeably better than when Mario was hired.

The defense is vastly improved over last season.

Too bad UM lost to two lesser teams, SMU and L-ville. An undefeated season was very doable. 9 points away.

Not sure if Miami will make the playoffs, or not. Even if they don’t, it was a successful season and with another great recruiting class coming in, Miami should be stacked.

Next year’s QB is the big question. Not sure any of the QB’ s on the roster are difference makers.

You’re too critical of Beck in general.

He didn’t have many bad throws at all this game. The pick was one for sure. It’s not fair to say Daniels “saved” the last throw because that was always meant to be a 50/50. Either it happens or it doesn’t, it didn’t matter because it’s the end of the game. They were just trying for that extra TD to definitively beat Notre Dame’s box score.

I think you’ve been critical in the past of us going to Toney too much too, when clearly he’s the most explosive freshman in the league. I don’t think keeping an eye on box score updates gives you a great read of what’s actually happening in games. Even the highlights miss a lot. The Canes have been ON since their last loss, and Beck has been great. Is he going down as the UM QB with the highest completion percentage ever? It’s unreal.

Beck is what he is. When he plays well, I praise him. When he sucks, I call him out on it.

At least one NFL draft analyst sees Beck much the same way I do.

“It was a four-INT outing from Miami quarterback Carson Beck against Louisville. He continues to struggle with ball placement and decision-making when asked to throw beyond 10 yards or when the pocket gets muddy. Far too often he makes an impulsive throw when pressured, and that often leads to poor accuracy. Beck started the season hot behind a very good Miami offensive line, but the Louisville game serves as a reminder that many NFL teams do not see him as a starting-caliber QB prospect.”

UM’s passing game is much to horizontal for my taste. Short passes to the flat are fine but I think Miami overdoes it. Part of the reason for that is Beck’s inability to throw long, Dawson is limited in what he can call. It could be the Beck’s arm is still injured. But, before his injury he had a reputation for forcing throws at UGA. Overall, he has had a good not great year this season IMHO. Not sure he was worth $4M. In 2025, having a QB who can’t run well makes little sense.

If Miami doesn’t make the final 12, Beck’s agent will have an interesting decision to make. I imagine he will sit Beck for whatever bowl game Miami gets into outside of the playoffs.

Miami had Fernando Mendoza right in their backyard, dying to play for Miami and Lashlee blew it.

Lashlee recruited King as a transfer and Jake Garcia as a freshman. Garcia totally washed out. He may have been involved in recruiting Jacurri Brown before he left to take the SMU job. Brown also washed out.
