UM would have needed both the perfect hire and even then it would have been more of a top 10 ceiling. Couldn’t compete with the Bama, OSUs, etc…College football became an arms race. And UM couldn’t compete…It could have been better than it was with the right hire, but even consistent top 10 was probably not happening.
BUT…It does appear that with NIL (even when it is reined in a little) UM can make a big run back towards the elite. So I now believe he’s wrong there. I feel dirty cheering for NIL, and I actually hate it as a CFB fan, but it has seemed to even the playing field for UM.
Mario Cristobal was a high floor hire for…He’s never been anywhere near a great gamely coach… but I believe he could have got UM back to 10 wins consistently. But with NIL money he’s basically a god on the recruiting trail, and there may be a big run coming from UM back to the elite. He is killing it, and with the people behind him being all in, he has one hell of a staff.
Realignment will work itself out…We’ll fall somewhere. And in a few years the whole country is probably in 2-3 conferences anywhere.
