Is it too soon to think who Miami will go after for next years qb. Or do they actually have one on the team they think can handle it. I ask because with the current receivers we have I don’t think they would stay around if there is not a good QB to play with.
If Beck continues to light it up, I would think high profile QBs would want to play for Miami.
This might be the future getting brighter.
I hope you are right but how long can we be paying top dollar for QB. Does Miami have the money to keep up with the bigger state schools.
I just hope we pay our coaching assistants enought to keep them if this continues on the up and up!
When you win, support is easier to find. IMO, if Miami has a dearth of talent at QB, they should recruit one through the portal. Certainly, Cam Ward earned his money, and it appears Carson Beck was a prudent choice. Mario has separated himself from other UM head coaches over the last two decades by being an exceptional recruiter and a redoubtable CEO-type head coach.
Darian Mensah from Duke….he has completed 67 percent of his passes for over 1,000 yards and had 8 touchdowns to 2 interceptions. He has elite level anticipation. He came from Tulane and he was my number one favorite qb in portal last year. Put him at Miami next year and their offense is elite.
I know it seems unlikely but my wish would be Raiola at Nebraska.
If not him, I like that freshman at Cal. monster arm
Best QB I’ve seen this year is John Mateer of Oklahoma, a guy whom Mario tried to recruit from WAZU. I think Mateer not Beck wins the Heisman. Hope it’s the reverse.
It will be interesting this week to see how Jackson Arnold, Auburn QB formerly of Oklahoma plays against Mateer and the Sooners. Arnold was a former 5 star player, but had a rocky year at Oklahoma. At Auburn, he’s done a good job commanding the offense. It should be a physical game; Auburn LB are standouts.
I agree with Elite80 on Mensah being a nice fit as a Hurricane.
Once in awhile the money should be spent on a high school QB with the talent to maybe develop into a Heisman candidate. Back to the old catch-22. Why sign with UM if they are just going to block your path forward with transfers?
Or just go all-in and admit to high schoolers we are recruiting you to sit in the sun around a bunch of tanned, fawning blondes and carry a clipboard for four years. Get a few snaps versus FAMU. And pray the guy we just paid $5M doesn’t get hurt.
Could be worse for some high school kid with an average arm and above average libido.
NIL has turned college football into a different sport. Money in most cases trumps perennial loyalty. Coaches who are astute tacticians are acutely aware of team weaknesses, knowing also that a losing record can quickly be resurrected by a superior, well-funded recruiting program.
Yes, unfair situations will occur due to NIL. With regard to QBs, coaches must be especially perspicacious since no player on the team is more important than the QB. A case in point would be Cam Ward’s coming to UM and turning Miami into the most productive offense in the entire college game. John Mateer at Oklahoma is fullfilling similar needs at Oklahoma and doing wonders cooling off the seat of Coach Brent Venables.
I am not a fan of Emory Williams despite him being a hard worker and not shying away from the physical part of the game. Emory, a local kid, was never overly successful as QB of Milton high school. He has a strong arm but appears to me a tad clumsy and lacks the quiet poise of Carson Beck. He reminds me of Tyler Van Dyke who occasionally had a good day under center.
I don’t like NIL, but it had to come about due to the glaring difference in recompense between the coaches and the true talent. To this end, we see a similar difference between coaching salaries and those of professors. Speaking of perceived unfairness, head football coaches are often the highest paid government workers in their state, earning more than Nobel laureate professors, university presidents, and the governors of their state. I believe the stage is about to be set for development of semi-public corporations associated with universities but removing major athletic personnel from being part of the university faculty.
Agree completely about the comments and comparisons on Emory.
When it comes to NIL, I really think it’s a blessing in disguise for Miami. College football is broken in one way or another. What’s clear is that Miami has been at a disadvantage for the last 20 years. Now the system seems to be working for us. I can’t complain about that.
There’s not much to argue with here, particularly on a position like QB. I feel like when it comes to high school recruiting I am barely interested in who they sign as a QB. Warm body with some upside is fine by me. Coleman seems to fit that bill. Better or worse than Nickel? Ehh, irrelevant.
As has been shown of late the key is depth in the trenches. At a relatively low cost. The skill players can be acquired at the right price later. More fodder for me not wasting much time on overall team analysis until say the middle of August. When the dust settles then a fan has an idea of the players to root for, familiar or not. No wonder UM chat boards are dead or just stomping grounds for unfocused testosterone. Nothing of substance to say or read, might as well be a platform for chest thumping.
I’m sure Miami will shop around for the best available transfer.
I think Emerson is a serviceable backup but he is not a championship level QB IMHO.
The other young QB’s are unknowns and some with transfer out if they don’t move up on the depth chart next spring.
Miami has a frosh coming in next season who is supposed to be all that but it would be better if he redshirts next season.
I don’t think we can keep hitting the portal…recruits at the QB spot won’t want to come play here, then what? It will be interesting to see what happens with who we have on our roster next year. The temptation will always be there, for any school, to take the best available even if there are guys on the roster who have been developed. Decisions, decisions…
Proven talent is better than theoretical talent.
Miami should hit the portal if they can get a QB with a proven record of success like Beck or Ward.
It would be great if Miami could get a transfer with more than one season of eligibility left.
Miami has had many top ranked QB recruits that didn’t pan out. Wright, Freeman, Olson,et al. The only recruit who did work out was Kaaya? Van Dyke, Harris and Rosier were mediocre for the most part. I may be forgetting someone?
Spencer Whipple was very underrated. (Although I guess he turned out to be a stud coach.)
Frankly, once it was determined that Mateer was out, I wish Miami had picked up Fernando Mendoza. Hometown kid.
Mateer looks like the best QB in the college game, and Mendoza, too, has been lighting it up.
Beck does a helluva lot better on quick passes which preclude him being subjected to pressure. Florida put more pressure on him than any previous teams. Their blitz packages were excellent. Under pressure, Beck does not elude people too well, exhibits “happy feet” syndrome and makes awkward throws. In games at Georgia, he showed capability of regaining his poise when the offense was more controlled, throwing a lot of flairs, screens, and short slants. Once he gains rhythm, his touch improves demonstrably.
Beck is a good QB - If he Mateer - No. But he is the perfect fit for this Miami team in 2025. Mario wants to pound the rock and Beck is fine with being a game manager.
