NEw Coaching hires

DVD CB coach
Simpson DL coach

Blake to remain DC with Manny calling the plays on gameday: “Blake will continue to run our defense and I will call the defensive plays on gamedays, which we feel is our best path to maximizing our strengths on that side of the ball," Diaz said.""

Welp, I guess it’s a net positive. Really like Simpson and T-Rob.

But make no mistake, Manny will have NO SCAPEGOAT if this Defense is markedly improved.

So a mediocre game day coach now has to call plays on defense.

Hopefully, Baker will feel slighted and leave. They should cut his pay in half if he isn’t calling plays on game day. He is the James Coley of DC’s without the recruiting prowess.

Simpson is a great hire. Has lots of connections in Georgia HS football and is by all accounts a great coach.

Van Dyke, no idea. Has he coached before?

Rumph supposedly moving to a “recruiting role”. WTF??? Wasn’t the main reason he was canned as CB coach his inability to recruit?

IMHO, Manny should have canned Baker and hired a guy who can call plays. And he should have let Rumph go, too. People who fail should get canned.

i’m officially done with Diaz now and he needs to be fired…leash has to be short with him.

all you had to do was fire your DC, who obviously is a poor coach… 554 yards rushing allowed in a single game! why is he still here if he’s not calling the plays? makes absolutely no sense and no serious program does such a thing.

also, if i read that correctly, Rumph is now a recruiting coordinator? that has to be a joke right? the guy who is the worst recruiter on the staff and constantly strikes out on his top targets is now solely focused on recruiting?

this entire program is a complete and utter trainwreck. incompetence from top to bottom!!!

An absolute travesty to:

  • Keep Patke
  • Keep Baker
  • Have Manny call the Defense
  • Put Rumph into a solely recruiting role

This means more awful special teams play, more unprepared defenses getting killed in the first quarter, a distracted head coach with an overall less disciplined team, fewer chances to evolve on gameday decison-making, a refusal of a head coach to move into his new role, and, of course, more huge Rumph misses.

What a catastrophe if this plays out.

I love DVD, but you don’t cut your teeth at the U. He probably had no other CB job waiting for him.

We have to lead the nation in coaches that couldn’t find another p5 job if we dropped them.

I didn’t even touch on this part, but yeah I agree. DVD was going to join Banda and be the CB coach at Utah State. That’s a good place to cut your teeth.

It’s obvious we REALLY need him in the recruitment department and gave him this concession to stay.

Devil’s advocate: Rumph moved into a “recruiting” position where he can do the least damage, simply scouting film and working hs coaches. No worries about him pissed and poisoning a high school (AH), no worries about him flubbing individual recruits, no worries about him poorly coaching.

I mean that’s a massive tell that he was essentially swapped with DVD. If a first time coach is seen as a better option than a coach with 5 years experience…

No this looks bad. Amateur hour. Get DVD from Utah State in 3-5 years after he cut his teeth down there. Was LSU going to hire DVD? Was UGA, UNC, Clemson, Virginia Tech? He hit on T Rob and then misses the layup.

And for a HC to be the DC calling plays is bad. I get that he might know his job is on the ropes and has to get this turned and only trusts himself. Well then get a very experienced guy to give you support and wisdom during the week. What a fail this is.

Yup. I think Manny felt TRob was a big enough win to carry the rest of the poor decisions. Like TRob is all us fans care about.

I hope hope hope some pressure could be put on Manny quick enough that he changes his mind about keeping Baker.

Food for thought…let’s say the plan was trob for DBs, hire a solo DC. The latter part falls through. Do you think you can get a quality DB coach to split the position with Trob? Do you keep rumph in that role? Do you reward DVD with the role?

I think he shot for a big DC and when that fell apart this was plan b.

For the life of me though…why is baker here? A dc who coaches a single on-field player (ILB) and doesn’t call plays. What is his on the field value again? You can move him to an analyst role with “special asst to the coach”, give trob coDC title (or bring banda back as solo DC), hire a recruiter or coach for LBs

I wonder what Ed Reed thinks of this plan. I would think he is shaking his head thinking what a weak sh!t show.

Dunno that Id put much stock in what the PR dept thinks about coaching hires

No offense but Reed is an ambassador, not a coaching oracle.

DB- upgrade
LB- push
DL- upgrade as we retain Stroud and add Simpson

HC- downgrade as Diaz has to now call the D.

Overall I would call it an upgrade for the D and a downgrade for the team. The next factor will be talent of the players. We likely improved on the backend but I’m truly concerned about DE since we have to have elite DE. We need the ncaa to allow one time transfers then grab at least one more. Would be nice to grab an elite LB to pair with all the young ones.

I’m just confused by the move. I don’t remember any team doing the replace the dc, but he’s dc and not calling plays?! Back to training on the job? Is Baker an ok recruiter?

I understand head coaches calling the o or the d, but Manny isn’t a vet career wise. I’m liking the pickups, but not this move.

Also, what’s Trobs actual role going to be now?

I think the original plan was big game hunting for a DC, knowing all would gladly accept Trob in the secondary. So get rid of Rumph because none would want him, let Stroud go back off field, then baker is hanging in the balance for the new DC to hire a DL and LB.

I think we whiffed on the DC and then things fell in place as they are now: Simpson was ready to come back and hired easy, baker became LB by default, extra coaching spot was available and DVD was rewarded.

I think this is correct. Manny missed on his target and had no other option but this musical chairs. But, in the end it is a win-win for the fans. If Manny pulls this off, wins the Coastal and a nice bowl, he is a rising star. If it fails he is fired and we get a new second-third tier corch.

Win win for fans, I guess so if you consider losing and waiting another 2-4 years.

I’d much rather Manny land an experienced DC like Brown or Steele. My guess is the budget just isn’t there. Thus, Manny is the fall back to DC plan.

In the end, they have to land better talent especially DB where we have missed for years. They then have to develop the kids. Lastly…they have to keep landing elite transfers.

T-Rob and Simpson are clear upgrades. There’s some talent to work with in the DL room - and Simpson should help from a fundamental standpoint. What’s disturbing however is that 2 poor coaches remain on staff, and to me that undermines everything on the defensive side of the ball. Baker in a leadership role in meeting rooms, in terms of organizing practices…what credibility does this guy have with “his staff”? And Patke’s ST’s are concerning. How’s the return game? Can we field a punt? How are the coverage teams? Overall athleticism should gives us an advantage 80% of the time. Imo Patke gets zero credit for Hedley and Borregales.
