BAHAHAHAHAHA…
I TOLD YOU…
Not a bad rebound for him.
I wish him good luck. Miami native. Tried hard. Just wasn’t the guy.
I think his niche is a DC
Not cut out for HC material
Doesn’t make him a bad person
I don’t know if this is true.
It’s tough for Miami to be your first head coaching gig.
He should have stayed at Temple- gotten a few years of experience on how to run a program and maybe even another step up to a mid program after that.
It’s a different beast here. Expectations are sky high even when we haven’t accomplished a thing in 20 years.
At Temple he would have been given time to figure it out. No one gives a shit there.
Every fan of Wisconsin just smiled reading this news.
I just read an article on Mark D’onofrio from when he was fired at Houston.
The article talked about how bad he was and how Miami fans warned them but they didn’t listen.
Well- are we warning Penn St? I actually think Manny is a hell of a DC when that’s his sole focus.
I remember when Manny took the reigns back a couple years ago and the defense hummed again.
What’s the consensus here? We think he’s not a good DC? Because I don’t agree with that one bit.
I think he was a very good DC. The missed tackles this year, and the lack of talent at LB and CB were the main reason they were so bad.
Yea- it’s amazing how moving one step beyond that position (DC) could have such a negative impact. You’d think he would firstly, select a guy with a similar style and pedigree… and b micromanage if it wasn’t being executed the way he wanted it done.
We’ve become so undisciplined on defense it’s scary.
Miami is funny…. We never put it together on all sides the same year for 2 decades. Every time the offense is humming the defense sucks, every time the defense is nasty, the offense is brutal…. And those rare instances where both do well- then our kickers fuck us in the asshole.
Manny was a good DC. Glad he landed quickly - and at a good program.
I wish him luck.
Did Franklin not watch any tape of Miami the last few seasons?
Manny is mediocre at best. After Golden’s recruits graduated, his flaws become obvious.
I hope Penn State fans enjoy missed tackles and giving up 4th and forevers in the clutch.
On the plus side, his buyout just went down considerably as his new salary will be deducted from the total. Never should have been hired as HC by UM in the first place.
Won’t be shocked when they fire him, too.
“Very good” was always pushing it for Diaz. I think he was a slightly above average DC with mixed results when he got to UM. He did well here early and started moving backwards.
His defense is Uber aggressive and at times gimmicky…It will be interesting to see if he can tweak it. I’m sure he’ll be recharged with something to prove and they could have done worse.
But, even though all defenses are taking turns getting lit up once in a while at UM, it has happened way too often the last couple seasons…WAY TOO OFTEN. What happened 2020 at home vs. UNC with everything on the line needs to be explained and, for Diaz’s future success, FIXED. There was no shame in giving up big offense to 2020 UNC. They were VERY good on that side (although Notre Dame basically shut them out the last 3 quarters)…You give up 30 ok? High 30s and 500 yards maybe? In today’s offensive era, I get it. But to give up like about 98% of total available yards (that’ a metric they keep track of now)…Was the worst g5 vs. g5 performance in college football in '20. They had 800 DAMN NEAR 800 FUCKING YARDS IN THE GAME. And if not for a couple of late runs into the line with 3rd stringers were right around 11 yards per play!
Did we play a good defensive game this year? I mean we put some pressure on B.Young. I guess we were OK vs. a good App State rushing attack. Every other game was a shootout. He lost safeties…but honestly Hall regressed so badly it was an upgrade. Bolden was a decent player, not great but adequate. Injuries were there, but not way out of bad on that side. Hell we don’t even force turnovers anymore.
And the man’s evaluation, recruiting and management and coaching of the LB position was inexcusable…Will be interesting to see how that goes at the other LBU. It’s not much better at corner. He did recruit his hybrids and safeties well, I give him that…And the DT position is as good as it’s been in a while.
Again, he had some strengths, and he started off with a bang at UM…I think his defenses were forward thinking, and could create havoc. But as I believe was the class of the whole program under Diaz…They simply weren’t TOUGH. And I’m starting to think the gimmicks have simply run out. Will be interesting.
I certainly hope Manny wasn’t in discussions with Penn State before being officially fired and while still under contract to Miami. I’m told such behavior is reprehensible.
Absolutely agree. Thing is, it wasn’t his fault someone offered him his dream job. He almost had to take it. But he should have learned at Temple and become the next up-and-comer like Al Golden. Experience would have helped him tremendously when it came time for the next step. Whether he could ever crack it at Miami is another question, but he would have been in a better position to succeed.
This is a smart hire for Penn State.
I agree - even if Manny is “just ok” as a DC, I’m sure PSU is also banking on Manny being able to use his south FL connections to lure kids up north.
Manny couldn’t even lure them to Miami when he was in Miami.
LOL. He’ll be like Costanza and do the opposite of everything he’s supposed to do.
With someone else making the personnel choices and helping him recruit, he is a good DC. On a scheme level, way too much zone for prevent D. Personnel level, way too focused on seniority over talent.
Man class is nice to see once in a while. Thanks.
Has always driven me crazy about this program. Years of overloading one spot for whatever reason it may have been and being low in others. Just never a complete team. Hope that changes. Always been talented, just in too few places at once.
Temple just fired Manny’s replacement after 3 seasons.
