It is relevant because no matter how much you tax or in this case Tarriff China it is we the consumer that is going to pay for it. China does not care if you Tarriff them. They will just return the favor. Putting Tarriffs on goods from Canada maybe the dumbest idea from Trump. These countries are laughing in Trumps face. You can Tarrriff the goods 100 percent, a 1000 percent, 10x that and guess who pays - US. You can create all these goods here in this country - China will laugh and just find another partner to do business with. Guess what your I-Phone will now be as much as the car you drive. Trumps policies are a joke. But hey…be the tough guy and lets see how this works out.

Tariffs will affect China. We need to be careful and not think that everything Trump does is 100% idiotic all of the time. Like I said, Biden didn’t lift Trump’s original tariffs.

Right now China produces a lot of the world’s steel. By raising the prices of Chinese steel, it lowers demand for it. A few years ago domestic (Chinese) demand for steel dropped because of their real estate troubles. They’ve been good at redirecting their surplus to exports. So the US can absolutely affect a small SMALL portion of this.

Not only that, but if China engages in a trade war, if China places counter tariffs on US imports, then the Chinese people are suddenly sharing the burden of this trade war with the American people. So, as with any trade war, there is some amount of seeing who blinks first.

I will agree that if he ultimately doesn’t succeed at either annexation of Canada OR a super “American friendly” trade surplus, then you may end up on the right side of this argument.

Thanks for the sensible reply, GSC. No one can really know in the moment. I would just like more caution when tearing up old alignments and agreements, many of which Trump himself made in his first term.

I don’t think Trump can possibly be serious about annexing Canada. His words seem to be increasing Canadian nationalism more than anything (just like his attacks against Zelensky INCREASED his domestic approval ratings).

All said, it would be great if the people of Canada did want to join the US as several states. It would make our country very powerful for the next century, not to mention introducing some single payer healthcare structures. Again, if this was an actual goal of Trump’s I think he’s going about it the wrong way.

For the record, if Canada did join the US, their added voting block would be the end of American conservatism as we know it.
