Looking Forward to the Season

I wish we weren’t starting the season with ND, likely the best team we’ll see this season. We’ll learn quickly whether we prudently spent over $4 billion filling the most important position on any football team. The entire season is dependent on whether Carson Beck can take over successfully the role so well carried out by Cam Ward. Can Beck be spared from being injured? Can Beck speed up his ball release, for it was Cam Ward’s read and quick release that nearly won him the Heisman. Last year, at Georgia, Beck incurred significant blame for holding the ball too long and throwing 12 pics. Some of the blame was unwarranted since Georgia receivers did what many old Hurricane teams have done; they DROPPED an inordinate number of drive-killing passes. Heaven help us if Beck falls to injury.

Among the receivers, I foresee three emerging stars: Trader who has great hands, Lofton who could become a legendary TE, a skilled ballcarrier as well. Then, we have Malachi to takeover and then some for the departed Xman. We’re really going to like this kid. If LSU transfer C.J. Daniel returns to his 2023 form, where he garnered over 1000 receiving yards, we’ll see another emerging star.

With one of the best offensive lines in the country, we sport one of the nations best tandems at RB. Lyle really impressed me last year. Fletcher and Lofton are formidable physical specimens capable of exerting their will in short yardage situations. Let’s hope that if we see greater success rushing the football; that we’ll take advantage of this strength and not go pass happy interrupting too quickly a ground attack that exhibits noticable success. If your successful pounding the rock, keep pounding.

On defense, we have a formidable defensive line. Bain should be mended from his leg injury. Justin Scott, Akeem Mesidor, Ahmad Moten, David Blay, and Armondo Blount all look like players who will eventually play on Sunday. Looking for Marquis Lightfoot to see some playing time. LB worries me this year. Bisaintthe played well last year, and Popo has shown improvement. We need to have others to step up their play. We still don’t have SEC-LBs, tall fast guys weighing 250 lbs–someone like Hayden Lowe and Kellen Willey look like future stars. I think recruiting current edge players is the answer at LB with proviso that they have foot speed.

Mario has done a terrific job in the defensive backfield. I am making a prediction here. Zechariah Poyser, who had 73 tackles at Jackson State along with a bevy of interceptions, could turn out to be an All American. He has a nose for the football and plays the game fiercely. Xavier Lucas was certainly missed by Wisconsin because he’s a talented CB.

It’s like we have four tough opponents: Notre Dame, Florida, Florida State and SMU. I predict we’ll lose to two of the above teams, most likely Notre Dame and Florida. Florida was really good peaking at the end of last season. Beating the Gators will be tough. I put FSU in the group because they’ve had to do a complete. remake from last year’s abysmal team. New QB Castellanos has declared that he will handle Alabama in game one I predict Castellanos may be sorry for making his rash comment. Nevertheless, nothing the Seminoles would like better than to take down the Canes. I rather like the hiring of Gus Malzahn who together with Norvell should have a much improved offensie. SMU played well under capable Coach Lashlee, and the Mustangs will be a tough opponent and even pull out a win. So, I am looking for a 10-2 season.

I always see us as a 3-4 loss team, no matter what. It’s been this way since about 2004. Last year we had Cam Ward and the easiest schedule I could imagine and 10-2 was the result and 3-4 other games were too close for my liking. We trailed Cal by 21 before winning by 1. Needed a pass touched by a player out of bounds before VT caught the pass for the win just to hang onto that one at home. Needed 52 to beat Louisville and only lead Duke by a point in the 4th quarter.

Pretty underwhelming if you ask me and the schedule I think is harder this year. I really wouldn’t bet on anything over 8-9 wins. Chalk says 8 wins, No ACC title game and a blah bowl game again. I have just HUGE questions about Mario and this staff and their ability to navagate us to victory week to week. Not sure I’ll ever be all that trusting of them. I really wish it was different.

Wow TMC that is a pretty harsh take. The sad thing is I can’t say you’re wrong.

I’m a fan of CMC overall and what he’s trying to build, but it’s hard to get excited about another coach and another turnaround after so many tries. If we can somehow continually attract great QBs then the odds are in our favor that eventually we’ll have an amazing year. On the other hand, if we repeat the cycle of waiting 10 years for someone halfway decent then we are doomed forever.

I REALLY want to be wrong. The defensive backfield killed us last year. it’s pretty much new this year. Many changes. To me though, communication is key in the secondary and guys will be figuring it out in game time as they go along since they’re together for the first time. It’s not the most ideal situation. You’d prefer a more experienced group coming back but we couldn’t afford to bring that back again so we hope it’s going to be improved. We can’t hope to be a little better there either. We need to be a LOT better. It was pretty rough last year.

As far as Mario? Fingers crossed!

Being cynical going into next season is a result of past recent season performance. We probably won more games last season than we deserved. We had statistically the most productive offense in the nation. Unfortunately, toward the latter part of last season, our opponents recognized our problem defending the passing game. My most disheartening memories of last season were the number of defensive collapses we witnessed on third and very long. Time after time we saw opponents keep drives alive that should have been stalled. While Cam was doing his Heisman thing, no name guys on other teams looked like Heisman QBs. I suppose we should be grateful that we were good at putting a lot of points on the board, and we scraped by small margins.
.
. This coming season we have a great deal more talent, especially on defense, especially on the defensive line. Modern offenses must devote themselves to outquicking the opposition, that is, QBs getting rid of the ball in stop watch time. Ergo, if your team has a slow, plodding pass rush, you’re going to get burned in regular fashion. Small wonder that today’s prototype defenders who disrupt the passing game are tall, lanky EDGE type players who exhibit physicality and foot speed. IMO, the epitome of this type player is Myles Garrett who is today’s embodiment of Lawrence Taylor, the best who ever was. To this end, keep your eye on Hayden Lowe.

Mario has shown that he’s a gifted judge of talent. This goes for his assessment and recruitment of talented players, but also on hiring coaches. Our new defensive coordinator, Corey Hetherman, I think is an exceptional hire. Regarding his past resume, I point to this article:

I really like Tennessee transfer Jakobe Thomas at strong safety .While he was injured much of last year, the previous year he had 52 solo tackles and assisted in 19 additional tackles. I adjudge us to be good at the CB position with Frederique and Lucas, and I believe our Free Safety Poyser is going to be a tackling machine and chief interceptor on the team.

We Will win ten games if we get at least a “good” year out of Carson Beck. The season is riding on Beck. In the past, he has shown he has the skill to have a good year, perhaps even an excellent one. `We’ll be an underdog to ND in our first game, but in the past we’ve well against the Irish as underdogs. If we, formerly know as the convicts win that first game, we’ll be buoyed substantially for the rest of the season.

I think the key to the ND game is controlling the line of scrimmage. Captain Obvious, right? ND O line is one of the best, so is ours, so it will come down to who has the better DLine. Bain needs to have a year!

I think we need to ease Beck into the season and let our Oline and stable of RB’s do the heavy lifting with some short and intermediate passing to keep them honest. Beck is really accurate but I’m not sure how the long ball will go out of the gate. UM has a GREAT medical staff so I’m sure Beck is in good hands.

If our DB’s can lock down guys it SHOULD give our guys time to get to the QB. Last year, we were horrible at getting pressure mid to late season.

I think we beat ND, FSU, and UF but lose to SMU.

I note that my prose now is fraught with errors. A good part of my life, I spent editing the work of others at which I was reasonably proficient. Curiously, I’ve never done a very good job with my own prose. Easy enough to excuse this peccadillo, attributing it to my aged state, but I’ve always done it. Spare me the corrections. I see them, and I am dutifully embarrassed by them.
