A very good response. Substance.
I can see your position. You’re right about the kids changing their shit all the time. Makes sense. I still think kids struggling with sexual identity or whatever should have an outlet to talk to without fear of it making it back to their folks for whatever reason, however. But, that’s why I’ve made it clear I don’t think anyone under 18 should be allowed to do actual drug therapy or sex changes or anything like that. I still think the counselor in this case was just fine but that’s a personal position. If the kid wants to be called whatever, who gives a shit? But, as far as their sexual identity and keeping it from their parents, I can see that too.
I don’t have kids. I’d like to think I would have built communication well enough with them that they can tell me if they are gay or think they are now to be called Steve. I’d have less of a problem with them being gay than changing gender. I’ve never been able to get my head around that one.
I totally agree with this statement, in the sense that kids to need to be able to have “private” conversations.
However, in this case the kids announced to the entire school. There’s nothing private or protected about that. And there was also the foresight of the parents to breach the subject with the school first and give instructions regarding it. For that to be ignored… that’s not entirely good.
Guess it’s a matter of authority for lack of better word…If you’re 10-11 years old you get called what your parents what to call you.
This is the problem with government taking over institutions. They begin to expand their mission.
This is a school. They shouldn’t be teaching sexuality. They shouldn’t be dealing with mental health issues.
If these issues present themselves, they should alert parents/guardians and the proper resources OUTSIDE AND INDEPENDENT of the school should take over.
A school is designed to teach children reading, math, and writing. That’s it. Everything else is an expanded scope of its original charter/mission. It’s gotten out of control.
This tiktok is a good example of this. They are now incorporating inappropriate content into Math lessons. Absolutely insane, inappropriate, and nonsensical.
Duuuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
SO PROCLAIMS GSC FROM ON HIGH…
I for one appreciate history, science, and arts being taught in school. I also believe counselors serve a purpose.
This is the great thing about America. If you disagree, you can pick a private institution or home school. Problem solved!
Except your tax dollars don’t follow you, so most people effectively cannot.
That worksheet is hilarious, btw!
It’s relevant to note that it wasn’t approved curriculum, just a bad choice by a teacher. There have been several bad choices by several teacher regarding this worksheet over the years, if you Google it. i guess someone teaching a sexual trafficking/algebra class (?) in a special online school posted it online around 10 years ago and the “resource” is available for random teachers to download.
Your tax dollars aren’t supposed to follow you. Taxes are for the community good, and what that is is decided by the government, which to some extent is made up of the community. Your level of participation in that process is up to you, but there’s no guarantee your taxes are going right back to your pocket.
I never said they should. I affirmed that they don’t.
What I’m saying is that you’re answer of simply selecting another education venue isn’t a practical solution for the vast majority of families who can’t afford it.
Don’t create red herrings.
Home schooling is practical to some and, in fact, a lot of poorer families can do it. But you’re absolutely right that public school is the most practical option for a lot of people.
Thing is, it’s impossible to find a public option that caters to the individual. If you indeed are choosing the public option, you need to understand it goes hand in hand with public curriculum. You don’t get to individually decide what is appropriate to teach and what isn’t. There simply is not a way to appease everybody here.
