The guy is a total savage; reminds me of a Jimmy Johnson type character. I’ve heard time and time again that the elite head coaches are more competitive than their entire roster. Saban, Meyer, Carrol, Harbaugh, these are guys that die inside when they lose. Hell, Harbaugh and Carrol nearly went to blows a few times after games between them. Brent reminds me of that kind of guy. Moreover, no player is going to run a muck on him - he has that kind of Alpha presence.
You KNOW his defensive philosophy fits new college football and that his teams would play physical. He, like Kirby Smart at Alabama, has been groomed in the top system for a very long time. You know he understands recruiting at the highest level and has contacts all over CFB to make good coaching hires.
Lastly, because of the aggressive offensive philosophy at Clemson I don’t see him making the same defensive hire mistake that some do where they don’t put in an aggressive offensive system. Lastly, I think Clemson is in a transition year and Miami has the clout to make that type of pull.
I think overall your general search needs to focus on guys with HC experience, that build the program around them and can recruit very well. I just think Brent’s ceiling is higher than a lot of those type of guys that we could get.
P.S. Don’t like Kiffin at all. Not saying he isn’t a good coach, just saying he has a once in a generation QB right now which he was handed. I’ve seen A LOT of Lane from being a Californian during his USC days. He’s not a program building coach, he’ll ride the highs high with his offensive coordinator skills, but he’s not a program builder and when adversity strikes he gets lost and doesn’t build the team foundation to consistently win like the greats can. Miami is not a place for a coach like that.
its a major red flag to me that he hasn’t gotten a HC gig yet. he may just be another Bud Foster…good coordinator who is just not cut out to be a CEO for whatever reason.
i’d say it again, we can’t afford to hire another guy with no HC experience. how many times do we need to see that this approach hasn’t been working for miami recently ?
its 2021 storm not 1995. what worked back then, doesn’t mean it will work now.
and i dont know why you mentioned coker as he only further validates my point, not yours.
the other coaches you mentioned are irrelevant because those occurred at programs not named miami. we have hired 3 green coaches post butch that have utterly failed. yeah let’s try that again…sounds like a great idea!
Although I believe/know there are exceptions the greats generally have head coach experience outside of Dabo.
Saban
Meyer
Carrol
The best formula is a program builder that quickly (not being done based on solely recruiting) built a small program that can beat higher tier programs that also recruits at an elite level.
Those guys are very rare - I don’t think any of them exist this year. Luke Fickels probably the best candidate but I wouldn’t put him in that elite candidate bucket.
I go Venables who’s spent a decade in Stoops Oklahoma system and Clemsons that has the other intangibles over Fickel who lacks some things IMO.
