Oculus – so good, I quit trying to write a horror screenplay after watching
Hereditary – best horror movie I’ve ever seen
Good post, Warden. Horror is a wonderful genre. Writing a tale of horror is a knack of precious few writers. I’ve been a lifetime fan of Robert E Howard who was exceptionally skilled at horrific descriptions in his old pulp fiction stories. These stories influenced F. Paul Wilson and his fabulous first novel The Keep, a spine tingler that will raise your heartbeat. If you haven’t read it, I urge you to get it.
When I was young, fantasy and Sci Fi were not particularly popular. I believe it was television and movies that elevated Sci Fi into being recognized as an important genre of literature.
A few nights ago, I watched a re-make of the The Thing. As a boy, I was a fan of John W. Campbell, who was instrumental in publishing great SF anthologies. Campbell was a complete odd ball, a thoroughly peculiar fellow who did more as an editor to further SF than any other. The original literary title of The Thing was Who Goes There.
It was John Carpenter who turned Campbell’s story into several movies. Carpenter too was an oddball, who furthered SF in dozens of B grade movies out of which there were some very good ones as well. I happened to meet him once, because he married a girl I dated when I lived in Miami. We met for an hour before boarding a plane at the Miami Airport. It was a great conversation.
About a month ago, I watched a rather low budget movie titled District 9, and I loved it. I am sure you, Warden, probably have seen it, but if you haven’t, you’ll like it.
Hope you continue in your endeavor to write a screen play or even a short story. You’re an idealist. Don’t discount writing a tale of future history. Perhaps you could expand the idea of an evil, egocentric, solopcistic senior citizen devoted to derrogating woke anarchy.
I’ll check out Robert E. Howard and F. Paul Wilson. Looks fun.
I know a bit about Campbell…him being a proponent of L Ron Hubbard and his overt racism. But, for a guy born in 1910, that can be expected. I will admit, my family is more racist than all of you combined and then multiplied by 4.
While I do appreciate the nod, I don’t think that narrative would be too interesting. There’s just too many of you. A spoiled generation of locusts who ate everything in their sights, left barren fields, and then blamed everyone else isn’t interesting. It’s the narrative everyone sees every single day. Been published a few times, won the Academic Decathlon (highest medal on the team at least) for rhetoric, but not worth much. Now I just yell at the TV when they get “who”/“whom” wrong and how frustrated I get that "irregardless’ is a word.
But, I don’t think you’re evil. I’ve met evil. Nobody on this board, including GSC and Storm, are evil.
