Horror Movie List of 2024

Morning folks…I don’t think I’ve knocked out any recent lists so I’ve gone back to 2022 this year in preparation of your Halloween fun

2022 has some really great horror movies including a couple of my all time favorites

The best on the list is Barbarian. It stars Bill Skarsgard from IT and from start to finish is just an extremely fun film
The Terrifier series (1 and 2) are throwbacks to the gory, gratuitous and terribly fun horror films of the past. I cannot recommend them enough. As low budget, independent films, they hit it out of the park

The trilogy of Pearl, X and Maxxine are really solid. The third one, Maxxine is the weakest of the three, but Pearl and X are masterpieces of the basic horror story

In no particular order, a few of the rest that are worth watching over the last few years

Talk to Me
Smile
Bodies, Bodies, Bodies
The Watcher
Evil Dead Rises (the new bunch is significantly better than the originals)
Late Night with the Devil
Fresh
When Evil Lurks (this Argentinian story should be considered the heir to The Exorcist and is brilliant)
The First Omen - the best of the Omens

For those of you who don’t watch a ton of them and still haven’t seen some greats of the past, looking for some scares this Halloween

Autopsy of Jane Doe
Grave Encounters and Grave Encounters 2
Occulus (so good, I quit trying to write a horror screenplay, which had been an almost daily act for 20 years)
In the Tall Grass (not scary but fun)
Hereditary (my favorite horror film of all time - a work of art in every way)
Host
The Babadook
The Visit

Enjoy and have a Happy Halloween

Great post, Warden.

Too bad about Maxxxine because I really liked X. I’ll still watch it.

Late Night with the Devil was pretty great, but it falls a little short for me. I don’t know if it was just not enough happening for a while, or when it finally did it went from 0 to 11 too fast. Still a recommended watch from me.

Everyone’s doing pagan horror again after VVitch. One interesting one I watched recently was Lord of Misrule on Hulu. It’s a little annoying because the moment-to-moment decisions the main characters make are dumb, and the movie moves from one scene to the next with little realism. But if you can suspend that disbelief I really really liked the high level idea, themes, plot, and resolution. With a better scriptwriter this movie could have been A+.
