Mario letting go of Lance Guidry

Now let’s see if he hires somebody who can stop a Pop Warner team from running wild on his defense.
A bad carpenter blames his tools. A good one learns to improvise/adjust enough with what he has to do a good or even decent job
Early reports are that Mario has approached Georgia Tech DC Tyler Santucci. He’s the DC that put together the D that held Cam and the Miami O to their lowest point scoring this season.
Don’t know much about Santucci…
Any realistic wish list’s out there?
Guidry never adjusted. We did have some capable players on D, not all, but some and a good DC HAS to make adjustments.
You hate to see anyone lose their job but this was a good move on the part of MC. It shows that he is able to do what Golden couldn’t/wouldn’t do. This NEEDS to be a really good hire.
Where’s Ward2Restrepo? He must be quite pleased.
Here’s an article that discusses possible replacements.
Forgot to note. Will Miami’s AD offer “counsel” on the next DC hire? As I said before, I don’t know how hands on or off he is with the football program. His neck is kind of in the noose here too.
Why is the Miami AD an issue? He’s a great AD.
Not saying he is an issue. Quite the opposite. I want him to be hands-on. However, from what the public can see, he does not seem to be.
And, correct me if wrong, but for the P5 most AD’s future is in the hands of their football coach. Things go badly there and the AD becomes a fall guy.
IIRC, this AD did not hire Mario? He was hired shortly after Mario was signed. Blake James had already been fired by then and the position was vacant.
Somewhat, but not really surprised Guidry was fired. I don’t think it would have made much difference who the DC was this season given how bad the LB’s and DB’s were. Miami had kids starting who simply were not ready to start. And Miami lost its best DB’s to graduation last season.
Mario knows all the inside baseball so if he thought Guidry was at fault, he probably was.
Hopefully, the next guy is a genius who can recruit. He won’t be starting from scratch but the defense needs a lot of work.
You are correct that Cristobal was hired before Radakovich. Cristobal was hired ~12/6/21 and Radakovich was hired ~12/8/21.
Typically the AD handpicks the head football coach. But there’s no way he could have replaced Cristobal right after being hired. One might assume that given that the hires were almost at the same time that “behind the scenes” Radakovich approved of the hire. Both negotiations were happening at the same time and hiring the football coach would have been a negotiating point (one hopes).
I still think their futures are intertwined. And that Radakovich will take the steps necessary to ensure his own survival (i.e., support of boosters).
Well, the DC hire will tell us where we are heading. I have no concern that this will be a good hire. Mario knows what he has to do and I applaud him for making the move. Had he kept Guidry for another year it would not have ended well.
It’s not just recruiting, it’s also developing.
I think at this point you have to give Mario the benefit of the doubt. He has shown to have standards set for Miami. He has improved each season in record, talent and the coaching staff. When something has not worked out he has quickly moved on. I thought Guidry did a decent job last year. I have no idea what happened this year. In the bowl game was what disturbing defensively is simple breakdowns. Listen sometimes the other team just has better players. Miami’s does not have great players especially on the back end but you can still limit certain things. That was not happening. It was no longer a personal issue. It became a coaching issue.
I look at it differently as building a program and that is what Mario is trying to do, he has accomplished that. The roster is more talented now then at any other time over the past 20 years. Miami’s offensive line next year brings back Francis Mauioga (JR), Markel Bell (Sr), Matthew McCoy (JR), Anez Cooper (JR). I don’t know the status of Jalen Rivers. Those guys have a ton of snaps for Miami. They have three potential NFL guys. Outside of the McKinney years when has Miami been this good on the OL. Miami will most likely have the number one offensive line in college football next year. Add in the kid from TCU and this line is elite. They do need to build some depth as the seasons are getting longer.
You look at the RB room. Martinez was a stud and now you have Fletcher and Lyle return. I will argue that this will be the best RB room in the ACC. You lose Restrepo but I think this a good thing. Jojo trader has more upside. He performed well in the bowl game. Miami needs more guys to step up at WR but the room is improving. Josh Moore has a chance to play early. I love Loftin as a player. Offensively Miami is set.
I don’t want to say Mario neglected the DB room for the past few seasons but will say that other areas of the team improving were more important. They improved the DB room a lot with this years portal class. You would have liked to have landed Hanks and Pickett. Hanks may still end up at Miami next year when their coach gets fired. Hanks was the difference maker Miami needed on the back end.
I like the approach Mario has taken with the portal this year. It is to enhance the team. You now need to be carerful that the culture you are building sticks. You saw with FSU that bringing in to many portal kids that players on your roster say the hell with this. You have a fine line.
There is no question that Mario has flaws as a coach. Most coaches do. Winning is not easy ask Ryan Day and now Dan Lanning. Day does not win the next two playoff games the pressure is back on as Ohio State clearly has the most talented roster this year. Miami is heading in the right direction. They need a QB…Get that and Miami will win the ACC next year and be in the playoff hunt again.
I don’t think Mario/staff have recruited well on the back end or even at the LB level. Somehow our DLine just disappeared, no pressure at all.
For me it’s this…
DB: Lack of talent/development/coaching
LB: Lack of size
DL: Lack of…who knows??
Linebacker is not a Miami problem its a college football problem. Texas, UGA and Ohio State are the only teams with both talent and depth at linebacker. The rest of college football the linebacker play is terrible. No one in hs wants to play LB anymore.
My disappointment is this…Miami no matter how bad or good the offense was…would always have a rugged defense. I there was one thing you could hang your hat on it was the fact that a Miami defense would do its part.
Watching replays of Iowa state running up and down the field was stomach-turning. Cam Ward was not to blame for the loss he did his part !! If you recruited these kids and then couldn’t even get them to at least resemble a D unit…THAT IS ON THE COACH.
Hats off to Mario for not pulling a Golden. Guidry/D played well last year but this year not so much. We have some really good coaches on D so the massive decline really surprised me this year.
I look for Mario to hire a really hungry younger guy who can not only recruit well but develop kids too.
Elite80’s appraisal of the state of affairs at UM is right on point. Indeed we need another QB. I think we can rule out securing one as formidable as Ward, but Nickel looks damn good to me. However, I’d like to see us pull in an experienced portal QB since I have no faith whatsoever in Emory Williams. Emory has desire but lacks athleticism.
Next year’s defensive line is going to be strong. Blount and Jones look very strong, and I expect Bain to have a better year. What we need are some speed guys at edge a really strong LB and some dynamic safeties. The name of the game in today’s college game is pressuring the QB and executing tackles for loss, keeping the opposition at 3rd and long, increasing chances to intercept the football. We need to improve defensive SPEED.
I fervently believe, as Elite80 maintains, that Mario is a program builder. Mario has his faults, but he is still one of the best recruiters in the game, plus he’s an extraordinary representative of the University of Miami. Mario is a good fit in Miami. I would not have fired Guidry, but I admire Mario’s decisiveness. I liked winning ten games this year.
Crazy- was the most demand position when we were young.
Youi would have kept Guidry? Why?
