At first, they relied for justification upon the Mediterranean tradition that persons of a different religion, or persons captured in war, could be enslaved for life. But hidden in this idea of slavery was the notion that persons who converted to Christianity should receive their freedom. Wealthy planters in the tropics, afraid that their cheap labor would be taken away from them because of this loophole, changed the reasoning behind their exploitation. Even persons who could prove that they were not captured in war and that they accepted the Catholic faith still could not change their appearance, any more than a leopard can change its spots. So by making color the key factor behind enslavement, dark-skinned people brought from Africa to work in silver mines and on sugar plantations could be exploited for life. Indeed, the servitude could be made hereditary, so enslaved people’s children automatically inherited the same unfree status.

Within a generation, the English definition of who could be made a slave had shifted from someone who was not a Christian to someone who was not European in appearance.

Those who wrote the colonial laws not only moved to make slavery racial; they also made it hereditary.

What is being left out of this discussion is how slavery was abolished. Were it not for Great Britain and the United States, it still might be an institution. When slavery was abolished by the U.S., the value of slaves evaporated. There were hundreds of thousands of slaves in Eastern Africa at the time and no market for them. White people however were the ultimate leaders in abolition of slavery, and they deserve a great measure of credit for their efforts toward achieving racial equality.

At the present time, blacks are better off by any measure in the United States than in any nation on earth, certainly better than any nation governed by blacks. If there was any serendipity relative to the slave trade, it was that blacks arrived in a nation in which their ancestors were able to prosper to a greater extent than blacks anywhere on earth.

I think we properly agree that persons be judged by character content, yet liberals want to develop a hierarchy of preferred ethnicities and confer greater rights upon minorities and lesser rights on the majority white population. So, we now live in a society where quotas are set up, and though illegal constitutionally, the left insists that the most important criterion of evaluating humans is the color of their skin which of course is completely and inherently racist.

Black crime has become endemic in urban America, and even a cursory examination of perpetrators and victims reveals that black commit disproportionate numbers of violent crimes. To attribute this to racism is ridiculous. Why do Asians who come to America with just shirts on their backs succeed to a far greater extent to blacks whose families speak the language and have lived in this country for generations. The breakdown of black families due to government intervention has done far more to harm black Americans than racial discrimination, and the reason for family dissolution has been poor governance and the advent of welfare programs and other social justice remedies that have been huge failures.

As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, Marxist strategy has de-emphazied wealth envy and replaced it by generating racial friction and promulgating myths such as the police are murdering blacks with impunity or white people are innately even unconsciously racist. They constantly offer disparate numbers as evidence of racism which is also a lie. One need only look at sport to refute this latter myth. Blacks now dominate many professional sports, especially basketball, football, and baseball. Fortunately, sports are merit based and the best, most skillful players are rewarded. There is a dearth of blacks who are physicists yet there are an inordinate number of Asians. Is this a valid reason to declare the discipline of physics to be be racist? Of course not. There is nobody on this message board who is racist. Racism is just about dead in America. But, it is the leftist who go around over turning rocks searching for covert racism everywhere while constantly labeling those who disagree with their SHITTY policies as racists.

Typical, basic racist response. Again, you’re little more than a racist old man

It was left out of the conversation because it’s not part of the conversation. No one was talking about the end of slavery.

That it was left out of the conversation is an important omission. It should always be remembered that blame for human servitude is not relegated to only one race. Blame for the practice should be shared more equitably, and credit for its abolition should be extolled more charitably.

You forgot your main point…blacks should be thankful and they’re criminals, right? Wasn’t that your main point?

Again, that premise was never asserted in this thread. You’re arguing with yourself here.

The only point was that chattel slavery in the West grew into a race-based institution. Do you disagree with the premise or not?

I think modern day blacks, just like modern day Cubans, Russians, Koreans, and others should be thankful they are Americans instead of being in their former oppressive, poor, corrupt countries.

Slavery has always been a horrible injustice. There’s nothing we can do to right the wrongs (through our history). But let’s not pretend that American Blacks aren’t infinitely better off than their African Black cousins who remained.

It would be foolish to think otherwise.

I mean, I admit I’m speaking from ignorance here, and of course a lot of people are better off here, but I’m not willing to write off an entire continent so easily. Who’s to say certain individuals or their generational heirs wouldn’t be better off in Africa?

These are the modern day countries where American blacks originated from:

Senegal:
GDP: $24 billion or $1,487 per capita.

Gambia:
GDP: $1.9 billion or $787 per capita

Mail: $17.3 billion or $858 per capita

USA black households per capita: $23,303

While I don’t think a direct comparison of per-capita GDP with the US is the most useful metric, you’re probably mostly right. I never looked into the breakdown of where slaves came from before. There’s also Angola, DR Congo, Congo, and Gabon, with those last two probably having the best living conditions of the bunch.
