Fall on the River

Fall is a great time of year on the river. Crabs by the thousands are on the sandbars. Last night, I threw my cast net one time. I pulled up 60 lbs of shrimp. Among the catch were about five pounds of jumbos. I fried them after first dipping them into tempura batter. Delicious. I ate them with jalapeno cheese hushpuppies. The rest I saved for bait.

October is the best fishing month of the year. I use a five weight fly rod with a 6 ft monofilament leader with one BB shot, the smallest possible sinker. I put a small live shrimp on it, and I catch a bass on just about every cast. Bass are school fish, and they cannot resist shrimp. This is a once in a year happening. Most of them are small, but what exhilaration it is to catch a larger one on a five weight rod. It just doesn’t get any better.

No need any longer to spend hundreds of dollars on fly fishing rods and reels. You can buy a combo Chinese rod and reel for $60 which are a great value.

The Mobile/Tensaw Delta is beautiful at sunset. Here’s a photo of a Tensaw River sunset.
