Florida Democrats, Qatar & Hamas: An Open Letter to FDP Chairwoman Nikki Fried

Dear Chairwoman Fried,
Blood money from an authoritarian regime and state sponsor of terrorism against Israel has no place in the coffers of elected Florida Democrats or their political consultants. It threatens the moral authority and electoral viability of our party across the state and, critically, in one of our most important Democratic counties, Miami-Dade.
As a fellow Jewish American and member of the Miami-Dade Democratic Executive Committee, I am also concerned that it calls into question our party’s commitment to Israel in the aftermath of the deadliest attack on Jews in 70 years. Now is not the time for equivocation or cowardice. It is time to call out the hypocrisy before it becomes complicity.
In May 2022, the Miami Herald revealed that Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, a Democrat, was in Qatar on an unannounced “free trip” to tour World Cup soccer stadiumsbuilt by the “forced labor” of migrant workers — what human rights organizations called “modern day slavery”— that resulted in “between 400 and 500” deaths and, according to the mayor, “to explore ways we can partner on transit investments.”
This luxurious three-night all-expense-paid junket — including roundtrip business class airfare, meals, transportation, and accommodations at the Ritz-Carlton Doha — cost over $10,000 per person, courtesy of Qatar: a notoriously anti-Semitic, misogynistic, and homophobic regime, an alleged financier of terrorism in Israel, that does business with communist Cuba, investing billions of dollars in the island’s oppressive government.
(Around the same time, Rod Stewart turned down over $1 million to perform in Qatar because of their deplorable human rights record.)
Along for this free ride were fellow Dems, Miami-Dade Commissioners Keon Hardemon and Oliver Gilbert, Miami Commissioner Christine King, and the mayor’s chief of staff and former Florida Democratic Party communications director Johanna Cervone; as well as disgraced former Miami Commissioner Alex Diaz de la Portilla, a Republican, removed from office last month by Gov. DeSantis after he was arrested on over a dozen charges including bribery, money laundering, and campaign finance crimes.
The trip was arranged by Mayor Levine Cava’s political consultant and campaign manager, Christian Ulvert, who she left off her delegation list because, Ulvert claimed, he’s a registered foreign agent for Qatar — and attended in thatcapacity, not as the mayor’s employee!
I’m no expert in ethics or good governance, but this struck me as a stunning and obscene conflict of interest.
At the time, the Herald Editorial Board spoke up, I spoke out, and the Democratic Party said nothing.
The situation — and our party’s silence — was an embarrassment then, and has grown more dire since.
In the wake of the recent repugnant terrorist attacks plotted and perpetrated by Hamas, whose slaughter of at least 1,400 people in Israel — the worst massacre of Jews since the Holocaust — led to the deaths of 2,383 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and West Bank, we have been reminded that Qatar is Hamas Headquarters:
In addition to a billion dollars in aid, Qatar provides safe haven for Hamas leaders “after falling out with their previous host, Syria, when Palestinian refugees participated in the 2011 uprising that preceded the Syrian Civil War.”Their senior political chief Ismail Haniyeh has operated from Doha, Qatar’s Capital, since 2020 and, when former Hamas chief and current head of Hamas’s diaspora office, Khaled Meshaal, called for protests across the Muslim world last Friday in support of the Palestinians and for neighboring countries to join the fight against Israel — “To all scholars who teach jihad,” he said, “this is a moment for the application (of theories)” — he did so from the comfort of Qatar.
Speeches and social media posts from Levine Cava and other Florida Democrats expressing solidarity with Israel and concern for the safety of Jews in the U.S. ring hollow as long as Qatari blood money is poisoning our party.
In addition to Levine Cava and Qatar, Ulvert is currently senior advisor and/or campaign consultant for over a dozen Dems in South Florida: State Senate Minority Leader Lauren Book, Miami Commissioner Sabina Covo, State Rep. Ashley Gantt, Miami Beach Mayor Dan Gelber, Miami-Dade Commissioner Oliver Gilbert, Former State Rep. and Miami Beach Mayoral candidate Michael Grieco, County Commissioners Danielle Cohen Higgins and Eileen Higgins, State Senate Pro Tempore Jason Pizzo, Miami-Dade Tax Collector candidate and former Miami Beach Commissioner David Richardson, Miami-Dade School Board Member Luisa Santos, State Rep. candidate Joe Saunders, and County Commissioner Micky Steinberg.
This would not be okay if it were Republicans and it is not okay for Democrats — so the decision to put our collective heads in the sand is disturbing, to put it mildly. As we continue to struggle against the over two decade-long GOP stranglehold on our state, it is more important than ever that we be principled and consistent.
The party should:

Immediately demand that Levine Cava, Hardemon, Gilbert, King, and any others return the Qatari blood money, approximately $10,160 each, in the form of donations to local Jewish charities from personal, campaign, or political committee funds, not public money; and…

Levine Cava, Book, Pizzo, Covo, Gantt, Gilbert, Grieco, and all Democrats working with Ulvert should demand he do the same, and end his representation of Qatar. If he refuses, they should immediately end their affiliation with him.
Democrats need to make a choice: Florida or Qatar?
